johnd Posted October 24, 2005 at 01:49 AM Report Posted October 24, 2005 at 01:49 AM You can use goole to translate some text or a web page, but don't expect the translation to be correct in the way that a human would translate - it will just give you an idea: http://www.google.com/language_tools Quote
trevelyan Posted October 24, 2005 at 09:49 AM Report Posted October 24, 2005 at 09:49 AM Go to the advanced page for control over annotation options as well as full webpage processing. http://www.adsotrans.com There are a few things things that set Adso apart from other translation/annotation sites: (1) Multiple annotation options: Chinese students are probably better off using the "Adsotate" option than the machine translation option. It segments the text by highlighting words as your mouse passes over them and provides popups with the appropriate english and pinyin. (2) Flexible: if you run into a word that the database does not recognize, you can add it to the backend dictionary in real-time. The more people do this the better the quality of the translations and annotations get. (3) All of the processing is based on an AI-rich backend, so the software will do things like automatically identify personal names, foreign loan words, etc. It also attempts to differentiate between things like duoyinci, and provide the correct pronunciation for words by analysing them in context. (4) We're slower than Google/Systran although you can speed things up by selecting the lowest quality setting. They use server farms to speed up translation: we have a single server. Also since the software is under active development, things also occasionally break. Quote
Long Zhiren Posted October 28, 2005 at 11:39 PM Report Posted October 28, 2005 at 11:39 PM I like cutting and pasting unknown characters and sequences of characters into http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php It is far superior to Google which sort of hit-or-miss gives you word for word. It rarely makes sense. With MDBG, you'll have to do some post-processing yourself by looking at many possible meanings and guessing yourself how they stack together. Some understanding of Chinese language will help immensely. http://www.adsotrans.com looks restricted to simplified characters. Quote
smalltownfart Posted November 9, 2005 at 06:00 PM Report Posted November 9, 2005 at 06:00 PM If you are using the Firefox browser, there is a very nifty firefox plugin that may just do the trick for you with minimum fuss. Look here for the original discussion. It's free and very usable. Yet another reason to install Firefox asap. Quote
Chinahand Posted November 10, 2005 at 11:18 AM Report Posted November 10, 2005 at 11:18 AM By far the best site I've found is: http://www.popjisyo.com/WebHint/Portal_e.aspx Type in a url set whether it is simplified chinese, traditional etc and it will annotate it very quickly showing the exact page. Or you can type stuff in manually. Plus study lists etc! Quote
