Hi everybody,

In december I will take the HSK elementry and intermediate. As a grammar reference for this HSK, I bought 征服HSK汉语语法 Conquer HSK Chinese Grammar, by 北京大学出版社Peking University Press.

This book explains the (HSK) grammar in Chinese and in English. Also explains the answers of the HSK excercises in Chinese and in English. Bought book yesterday, at first sight looks ok to me.

Anyone had any experiences with this book?

Good luck to everybody who is also studying for the HSK!

The book was 75.00元,bought it at the BCLU bookshop. But I think you can buy it in any bookstore where they sell HSK stuff.

Can not tell you more about the book yet, beause at the moment I am studying for my midterms at Tsinghua. :wall

I like the book... among other reasons because as it's been mentioned, it's bilingual.

However, my impression after taking a look at it is that it's a nice book to correct your grammar mistakes for HSK than as a real reference grammar book. More than explaining the grammar meanings, it focuses on pattern correct usage. Which of course is great to prepare an exam, but perhaps not so good to study on a general basis.

Also I don't really think it's aimed at beginners... lots of characters and deep vocabulary... but no pinyin at all.

But as I said, I do like it.

This book is for beginners:

Practical Chinese Grammar for Foreigners(Chinese - English)

And I think the following book is also helpful for a little above beginners, according to our previous customers:

900 Sample Sentences Error Analysis: For Chinese Learner from English Country (Chinese-English)

http://shop.aaawww.net/mod8/detail.php?gid=323526&userid=7912&catid=494130

If you are in Shanghai, I suppose it's not very difficult to find them.

Elina, The links you reference no longer work. Do you have updated links? Also, does "900 Sample Sentences Error Analysis" have pinyin as well as English and Chinese text?

I'm still looking for recommendations for a good grammar reference book suitable for 1st year students but with enough depth to be useful for many years as I progress. Any suggestions?

Thx

I’m afraid we really don’t know the answer, please see the No 13 post here:

The following books have pinyin, but every book mentioned in my posts in this thread has no English translation for the sample sentences, only English translation for the grammar point:

Speaking Chinese 300 Grammatical Points (Chinese-English)

实用汉语语法三百点(汉英)

Chinese Grammar Without Tears (Chinese-English)

I also think you could try some other publishers outside mainland China, see here:
