Hi all, well been studying a bit (well alot) and came across this phrase, I can translate it but only literally... ie the sky will not drop pies... or similar but what is its meaning... more study for me I know but thought I might get some insight from others too... cheers...

天上不会掉馅儿饼

i.e. 没有不劳而获的事儿

or 没有耕耘,就没有收获

no pay, no gain.

do not expect to reap without sowing

In this internet era with its freewares/warez that phrase seems archaic and surely needs some updating:

Nothing is free under heaven bar the virtual one.

One can easily reap without having sown.

Thanks for that... I sort of thought along those lines myself but its made clearer with other input... cheers

锄禾日当午,

汗滴禾下土,

谁吃盘中餐,

粒粒皆辛苦。

Pretty simple poem, anyone needs a translation?

I think the meaning of the poem is slightly different from "天上不会掉馅儿饼".
