It's in the to-watch pile ( which isn't getting any smaller). Should have finished watching it by next week, so I'll report back and spoil the plot for you.

Took me longer to get round to watching it than I thought . . .

Enjoyed this film a lot. Pretty gritty, bleak view of the mines and people who work in them, but I thought the relationships between the three main characters were well handled - though maybe the kid was just a bit too good to be true, reading his history book and so on.

Short, at about 1h20mins, which suits me - I have a miserable attention span for movies, which is why I still haven't finished watching Zhantai.

My version has reasonably good English subtitles - I wouldn't have been able to understand too much without them.

The HK version runs a bit longer at 92 minutes. I've read that the mainland release is cut for nudity and a song.

Can anyone tell me what that first song in the OK bar was (not the Long Live Socialism song which was probably cut) that they were singing? I recognized it but my mind went blank on what it was. Now it's bugging me.

明明白白我的心, karaoke classic.

Both the HK version and the cut version are available in Beijing. I got the HK version by luck - I didn't know there were cuts in the mainland version when I got it. I can guess which bits have gone though.

PS Not sure that link will work as it has Chinese characters in it. I just searched Baidu.com for the title though.

Yes that's it, thanks. And it turns out I have it on CD. But since I don't haunt the OK bars, I'm trying to figure why do _I_ recognize it? I thought it must have been featured in a famous movie but I can't place it.

You couldn't have so much as overflown China without hearing it somewhere . . .
