hey guys!

Do you know if the word for orphan "孤儿" is pronounced as two syllables "gu1 er2" or as one syllable "grrr1"?

Thanks!

答 - I've seen this as both da2 and da1

Is one of them "to answer" (verb) and the other "answer" (a noun)? Or are they just differences among accents?

Thanks!

I'd use two syllables.

I think there's some sensitivity with this word; at least I was cautioned not to use it around someone who was in fact an orphan.

According to Xiandai Hanyu Cidian ->

Da1 is the same as Da2, but is used exclusively for several terms such as 答腔, 答讪, 答应, 答理, 答言.

As to 孤儿, it is gu1 er2.

Perhaps you should get yourself a good dictionary ...

Yes Skylee, my dictionary doesn't seem to be proving itself very useful as I'm learning more and more. I think I'll invest in a really good electronic one, but I'll search around and see what out there is top notch. Thanks!

That reply didn't sound harsh, did it? Reading it over, it seemed a bit, and I didn't mean that one bit! Sorry if it did!
