Desmond Posted November 5, 2005 at 11:19 PM Report Posted November 5, 2005 at 11:19 PM hey guys! Do you know if the word for orphan "孤儿" is pronounced as two syllables "gu1 er2" or as one syllable "grrr1"? Thanks! Quote
Desmond Posted November 5, 2005 at 11:37 PM Author Report Posted November 5, 2005 at 11:37 PM 答 - I've seen this as both da2 and da1 Is one of them "to answer" (verb) and the other "answer" (a noun)? Or are they just differences among accents? Thanks! Quote
889 Posted November 6, 2005 at 12:40 AM Report Posted November 6, 2005 at 12:40 AM I'd use two syllables. I think there's some sensitivity with this word; at least I was cautioned not to use it around someone who was in fact an orphan. Quote
skylee Posted November 6, 2005 at 12:48 AM Report Posted November 6, 2005 at 12:48 AM According to Xiandai Hanyu Cidian -> Da1 is the same as Da2, but is used exclusively for several terms such as 答腔, 答讪, 答应, 答理, 答言. As to 孤儿, it is gu1 er2. Perhaps you should get yourself a good dictionary ... Quote
Desmond Posted November 6, 2005 at 02:11 AM Author Report Posted November 6, 2005 at 02:11 AM Yes Skylee, my dictionary doesn't seem to be proving itself very useful as I'm learning more and more. I think I'll invest in a really good electronic one, but I'll search around and see what out there is top notch. Thanks! Quote
Desmond Posted November 6, 2005 at 02:16 AM Author Report Posted November 6, 2005 at 02:16 AM That reply didn't sound harsh, did it? Reading it over, it seemed a bit, and I didn't mean that one bit! Sorry if it did! Quote
yuanlina Posted November 6, 2005 at 11:56 AM Report Posted November 6, 2005 at 11:56 AM It should be gu1 er2 Quote
