At this school. The kids are required to learn Mandarin Chinese.

I would try to describe the school myself, but just read the website.

But we're talking, illiterate at elementary 6th grade, to getting accepted to 4 year universities. This place is hardcore.

Well that is 6 yrs. I think it's completely possible. Ever met chinese students who attented an american high school? My college had some--they were like a native speaker. If they use chinese for social interaction (or encourage this) I'm sure they will do well.

Seems like they have an eye on the future. Good for them.

the "future" is China continuing to supply cheap labor and cheap manufacturing and learn English to better serve the dominant US hegemony. That's how it's going to be for a long time the way things look now - and if things are going to change, it won't happen without armed conflict and/or other turmoil.

I can't really see the point of this intensive Mandarin?? Or is this just a cultural exchange thing? (didn really read the site)
