Ian_Lee Posted January 12, 2004 at 07:37 PM Report Posted January 12, 2004 at 07:37 PM What is the most popular Chinese agricultural product? I would say it is the Tientsin chestnut. At many kiosks in the JR station in many Japanese cities especially during New Year Time, there is always one specializing in selling chestnuts from Tientsin. They placed the big 4-characters sign to advertise that it was "Tientsin Chestnut". The chestnuts were all bite-size, hot and warm, crunchy outside but soft inside. In Hong Kong, there used to be many street hawkers stir-frying chestnuts with black sand in a huge wok. Even Filipino maids line up to buy it on a chilly Sunday. In front of the theaters in Paris some years ago, I also saw street vendors selling hot chestnuts. But they grilled them on a hot iron plate. Out of nostalgic, I bought some. I peeled the layer and found one side burned but the other side raw in the chestnut. Quote
