anonymoose Posted December 5, 2005 at 11:31 AM Report Posted December 5, 2005 at 11:31 AM I read an article on the net, but got stuck on a few phrases. Can anyone help with: 1) 包了房 2) 把我们堵在宾馆的床上 (specifically, what does 堵 mean here? corner us with no way out?) 3) 抽了王强几嘴巴 4) 我又被种种看似合理的理由 5) 生怕吃不到羊肉惹得一身臊 6) 他不是拿话搪塞,就是顾左右而言他 7) 睡着不烧爬起来烧 8 ) 走马灯似的换 Here is the original article with the problem phrases in black: From http://eladies.sina.com.cn/qg/2005/0413/0951152334.html Quote

lefuzzbox Posted December 5, 2005 at 01:00 PM Report Posted December 5, 2005 at 01:00 PM man,i can imagine how hard this would be for a chinese learner, some of those phrases are sorta only used in oral chinese, and can hardly be seen in any formal chinese article. 1) 包了房 - booked a room. "开房" means "to get a room" and "包房" means the "room" booked by ppl for having sex in a hotel specifically. 2) 把我们堵在宾馆的床上 - they were caught having sex (on the bad) in a hotel. 堵 means 'catch' in it. 3) 抽了王强几嘴巴 - slap(ed) wang in the face/wang got slaped in the face. 抽,when it comes along with words like "嘴巴" or "巴掌",means "to slap in the face", 4) 我又被种种看似合理的理由 - theres a typo in it.i think it should be "我又由于种种看似合理的理由,被调到业务部门",and literally the phrase means "i was transfered to another department, due to some so-called rational reasons." 5) 生怕吃不到羊肉惹得一身臊 - "im worried that i might end up not getting what i want, and lose my reputation in the mean time." 6) 他不是拿话搪塞,就是顾左右而言他 - "he either wouldnt answer my questions directly,or just keep changing the subject." 7) 睡着不烧爬起来烧 - then i must be crazy. i never saw this one before,i just know what it means, could be the girl's hometown slang or smth. 走马灯似的换 - changed very fast (one by one) “走马灯”is a chinese slang, means "fast". my english isnt very good, hope it helps .... jukebox Posted December 6, 2005 at 04:16 PM Report Posted December 6, 2005 at 04:16 PM What does 很牛 mean here? Is it a slang of mainland chinese language? means 超强, and 超强 means some1 rulez/rocks 牛 is originally a slang in northeastern China (牛X/牛叉/NB/牛B are variant forms), but it spreads widely in forums and BBS. What is mainland Chinese language? I find that people from Taiwan always split Chinese into Mainland Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin. But would you please use Beijing Mandarin as an unambiguous term when making fun of nominal 'mainland mandarin' upon '-er sound' or 'retroflex sound'? Quote
對話的喧囂 Posted December 7, 2005 at 10:16 AM Report Posted December 7, 2005 at 10:16 AM Chill out! Jukebox! Don't get me wrong. Please do not feel offended. When I used ‘mainland Chinese language’, I wasn’t projecting any discrimination against what came to your thought. I wasn’t ridiculing or making fun of it. It’s just a way to demarcate a language from same source but spoken in different areas, such as Singaporean Chinese, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese. You won’t accuse people to be ambiguous or not politically correct when they ask if a certain English phrase is American English, British English, or Australian English, to name but a few, will you? Once again, no offense. According to you, the nominal ‘mainland mandarin’ is a mock, then won’t it be too arbitrary and parochial to represent Chinese language in terms of Beijing Mandarin? All I am driving at is that discrimination between A and B is, sometimes, inevitable, but it is not necessarily with discrimination. Word/ Language itself is neutral.; it’s distorted only when people will it to become foul or fair. All I was interested is the new phrase used by anonymoose, which I’ve never heard of in Taiwan. If my lame wording did get to you, then apologies is all mine. Hope this time won’t hit your raw nerve. 輕鬆ㄧ點嘛! Jukebox.
