Hi! I'm finishing up simplified "Prince and Pauper", and the last phrase in the paragraph below is giving me trouble.

数日后，王宫传出国王突然去世的消息，流浪在外的王子简直有如晴天霹雳！立刻跑

回皇宫，可是武士说什么也不让他进宫，王子只好徘徊在皇宫附近，流着眼泪自责

不已得说：“想不到因一时的贪玩，竟落得连父王去世都无法陪在身边。”

I think it's something like "Due to the single time he engaged in a stupid game (when th prince exchanged clothes with the pauper), he now can't even be at his father's side".

竟落得连 is the most unclear expression here. What would be the right way to translate this?

落: down

得: 补语助词

连: even, here is to start the whole 补语

...., in the end he is so down even at the time his father's dying he couldn't be at his side.
