hakkaboy Posted December 9, 2005 at 10:14 AM Report Posted December 9, 2005 at 10:14 AM Someone said that Chinese Internet cafes have no CD ROM drives. I am arriving in China on Dec 18th, but I will need to send a file of several MBs from my laptop tosomeone abroad in January. how can I do that? Can I get a wangba to connect my laptop directly to the INternet? Quote
chenpv Posted December 9, 2005 at 11:25 AM Report Posted December 9, 2005 at 11:25 AM I think the university where you study has the access to Internet. Quote
gougou Posted December 9, 2005 at 12:31 PM Report Posted December 9, 2005 at 12:31 PM There's wireless internet in many cafes. For a listing of hotspots in major Chinese cities, check danwei.org (bottom of the right sidebar) Quote
malinuo Posted December 9, 2005 at 12:54 PM Report Posted December 9, 2005 at 12:54 PM In the internet cafes I went to, a lot of people seemed to use USB memory sticks without any problem. (I never used it myself, but instead used free WiFi places or a friend with adsl.) Quote
hakkaboy Posted December 11, 2005 at 06:41 PM Author Report Posted December 11, 2005 at 06:41 PM What do I need on my laptop to be able to use free WiFi? Do I need hardware/software? Quote
malinuo Posted December 11, 2005 at 07:44 PM Report Posted December 11, 2005 at 07:44 PM > What do I need on my laptop to be able to use free WiFi? Do I need hardware/software? You need a WiFi card and a driver for it. I'm pretty sure you can buy a card where you bought your laptop. WiFi cards are often built in with high end laptops. See gougou's entry for a list of wireless hotspots (which is where you can use WiFi) in China. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi Quote
Quest Posted December 11, 2005 at 09:32 PM Report Posted December 11, 2005 at 09:32 PM How many MB is several MB? Sending MBs of data shouldn't be a problem... There are many ways to do it. Quote
hakkaboy Posted December 12, 2005 at 11:01 AM Author Report Posted December 12, 2005 at 11:01 AM Quest, I have in mind a 3 MB file. Quote
Quest Posted December 12, 2005 at 11:53 PM Report Posted December 12, 2005 at 11:53 PM That's easy, you can do it via direct dialup services (no registration, usually 0.08/min RMB charged to the phone account, in Guangdong the number to dial is: 96169). What city are you going to be in? Quote
hakkaboy Posted December 13, 2005 at 01:16 PM Author Report Posted December 13, 2005 at 01:16 PM Kunming. do you think every wangba will be able to advise me on this? Quote
Quest Posted December 14, 2005 at 12:59 AM Report Posted December 14, 2005 at 12:59 AM according to this site: 昆明---拨号:16300 用户名:16300 密码:16300 0.08元/min So, just do a normal dialup, and use 16300 as the # to dial, 16300 as username and password, should get you connected anywhere you have access to a phone line, 0.08 RMB/min 3MB should take you about 20-30 minutes I think, which would cost you about 2 yuan. or you can try the wangba first, but wangba costs too.
