computing in kunming

in case anyone is interested....i just bought me a new computer at one of the many

shops near the uni in kunming. got the whole set-up...desk 'puter, 19" monitor, speakers,

scanner, printer, wireless router, headphones, and a desk and chair - delivered and

set up for 6k. (2.6 mHz, 80GB, 512 DDR, netcard)

and it included english versions (legit) of windows xp, ms-office, and

adobe photoshop. could have gotten a better deal (maybe) with the chinese brands,

but went with lenovo/seagate/samsung/phillips/etc.

dsl at this location runs 100/month.

the english software did not display chinese simplified characters, but the shop also

provided XP service pack 2 with asian language fonts. only took 5 minutes to get

characters to display on websites, and to type in ms-word.

yay.

How is Lenovo "not a Chinese brand"?

Anyhow, if you want to be online all the time, you should be careful, since the price you are paying for DSL seems like it is a metered plan. I vaguely recall unlimited "2Mb" DSL costs more like 150 RMB/month in Kunming.

click on this and lookiehere: http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/ you can buy these

lenovo suckers in the us-by-gawd-of-a.

lenovo is no longer a purely 'chinese' brand, but rather is becoming an internationally-

known trademark. could have something to do with their purchase of ibm's pc

division - they now own the 'thinkpad.' and they've just signed a deal to use disney

characters in their marketing. they have a reputation for quality products and

service.

i s'pose i didn't express myself correctly. i meant to compare with purely domestic

brands.
