Nordoff Posted December 26, 2005 at 11:58 PM Report Posted December 26, 2005 at 11:58 PM Just wondering how you would describe plurals of plates of mild steel in mandarin. Is it the number then the symbol for plates? (Tried that one for a bit but not sure it was right) EG on the 4th plate out of 14 plates of 4M by 2M by 6mm how would it be best described? Not sure if sheet's of steel would be described as plates or otherwise in mandarin. Simple numbers I'm okay with. Complex numbers I'm just starting to learn The terms to describe what multiples I'm on about I'm still just at the beginning. It's not an actual neccessity to my job. More of an idle curiosity. Cheers Gav PS Learning from the pimsleurs[sp?] series for speaking and several books for script. Quote
anonymoose Posted December 27, 2005 at 03:29 PM Report Posted December 27, 2005 at 03:29 PM I'm not completely sure what you're wanting to say, but 'steel plate' is 钢板. If you wish to specify a number of steel plates, you need to use a so-called measure word, in this case 块 or 张, so '4 steel plates' would be 四块钢板. To say 4th (rather than 4), you just need to add 第 before the number, so 'the 4th steel plate' would be 第四块钢板. 'Mild steel' is 软钢. If you have any steel-related vocabulary questions, take a look at http://www.fane.cn/article_view.asp?id=1759&page=1 Quote
