Not sure if this should go in Living in China, as it's not really about Chinese films, or in Chinese films, as it's about Chinese cinemas. Takes less scrolling to get to Living in China though . . .

The cinema near me is showing Chen Kaige's Killing me Softly this month. I'm a bit suprised by this, as a) it came out ages ago, in 2002, and B) it's a godawful waste of cinematic space

Is it just this one cinema, or is it on general release. And does anyone know why it's appearing in cinemas now? Is it just because they think Chen Kaige's name will sell tickets?

From the notes on IMDB it sounds more than a godawful waster there Roddy...

Some people do appear to like it. Here's some quotes culled from rottentomatoes.com though

"What a great shame that such a talented director as Chen Kaige has chosen to make his English-language debut with a film so poorly plotted and scripted."
"With miscast leads, banal dialogue and an absurdly overblown climax, Killing Me Softly belongs firmly in the so-bad-it's-good camp."
"Resembles a soft porn Brian De Palma pastiche."
"It is sad to have to say to them that only the pleasing thing of the tape is the naked body of the Heather..."

I'm only quoting the negative ones though, so if anyone likes the film feel free to come back with some positive ones. . .

PS Can you guess which quote was translated from Spanish by babelfish?

This movie is being shown China wide, 新闻晨报 tells me. It's name is 致命温柔.

Sucks for Chen Kaige- King Kong (金刚) starts 1/12/2006 in cinemas across China.

According to my diary, I saw this film on 15.6.2002. 3.5 years ago!!! It is an old film ... and why would anyone want to pay for the ticket when the film is available on cheap VCD/DVD? :-?
