Shadowdh Posted January 5, 2006 at 10:59 AM Report Posted January 5, 2006 at 10:59 AM Hi there all, I was looking at getting the Nokia 7710 as it has some interesting and useful features that would be handy to have... but would the pleco software work on it as it seems to act as a PDA/Palm thingy... and if not then whats the general consensus on the best mid range palm around... (I seem to remember there was a thread on it but cant seem to find it...) Cheers Quote
roddy Posted January 5, 2006 at 11:18 AM Report Posted January 5, 2006 at 11:18 AM The 7710 runs on Symbian OS, and Plecodict currently only have Palm and Pocket PC OS versions, so I don't think you can. I daresay Mike will be in shortly to confirm. I think this is the thread you are looking for. Roddy Quote
Shadowdh Posted January 5, 2006 at 11:36 AM Author Report Posted January 5, 2006 at 11:36 AM Ahh I see so its the OS thats the hurdle there... ok, thanks.... I am sooo IT illiterate... thanks for the link, thats the one, but it didnt mention which palm (or PPC) would be the better but I gather it depends on what you want it to do... Quote
Shadowdh Posted January 5, 2006 at 07:13 PM Author Report Posted January 5, 2006 at 07:13 PM Ok after an afternoon of research (and talking to a buddy who is a Computer geek(his terms)) I have decided I will look into getting something like the acer n50 premium found here http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page4.do?dau22.oid=8343&UserCtxParam=0&GroupCtxParam=0&dctx1=17&CountryISOCtxParam=UK&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&crc=2646416425 or the palm tx worldmate pro... Found here http://eurostore.palm.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/ConsumerEN/en_US/-/GBP/ViewProduct-Start?ProductRef=1047WM@ConsumerEN&CountryName=United%20Kingdom&cid=CD2074R[EMEA] (Does anyone know how to tidy the addys up so they are not so long...?? told you I was IT illiterate... doh...!!!) Main reason for looking is to use it for Chinese studies with pleco most probably (but looking into whats out there so again any suggestions and reviews most welcome) and I will also be looking to use it for a proofreading platform for essays and things that I have coming up... plus I would like to have a bit of versatility like reading articles and things I have either downloaded or found on the net (and preferrably in other languages like Chinese and Russian...) any thoughts and suggestions... Cheers for any help... Quote
mikelove Posted January 6, 2006 at 01:53 AM Report Posted January 6, 2006 at 01:53 AM Roddy's correct that it won't run on Symbian - we've thought about supporting Symbian phones, but it would require us to pretty much rewrite the entire program, whereas we can maintain a lot of the same code between the Palm/PPC and future desktop versions. Both of the models you mention should have no problems running PlecoDict. There was an intermittent crashing bug with the TX, but we think we've fixed it now. The Acer is a particularly good PPC pick, since unlike most new models it doesn't come with the thoroughly-dreadful Windows Mobile 5 OS but rather the older, simpler, and more reliable Windows Mobile 2003. Given the fact that you'd like to be able to read articles in both Chinese and Russian, the Acer might be a better bet - it's possible to read both Russian and Chinese on Palm, but not easily and not at the same time. (it's not completely trivial on Pocket PC, but with the right font settings it should be quite doable) Oh, and http://tinyurl.com/ is a great way to shorten long links in postings etc. Quote
Shadowdh Posted January 6, 2006 at 07:47 AM Author Report Posted January 6, 2006 at 07:47 AM Mike... thanks for the info and helping me make the decision... Acer it is... and I did notice the older OS there (after reading some very informative posts by your good self and Others)... I was sort of leaning that way but its always nice to ask those who know more than I... Thanks to you and Roddy for the shorter url things as well... Quote
