rockytriton Posted January 18, 2006 at 01:22 AM Report Posted January 18, 2006 at 01:22 AM I don't know if its ok to ask this here or not, but I have some AVI files that are in PAL format, when I try to burn them to DVD, my NTSC player won't play them. Does anyone know how to convert them to NTSC? I should probably just break down and buy a player that supports both, but I'm cheap. Quote
Gary Soup Posted January 18, 2006 at 04:11 AM Report Posted January 18, 2006 at 04:11 AM Buy the player. Here in San Francisco, DVD players that are dual-format AND region code-free are as cheap as $40, and you can probably find a similar price online. Quote
character Posted January 18, 2006 at 05:45 PM Report Posted January 18, 2006 at 05:45 PM Here's a link to a thread on another discussion board about such DVD players. The Philips DVP642 DVD Divx Player was highly recommended on it. Quote
laolee Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:56 PM Report Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:56 PM You could also play them on your computer with no problem. I looked into converting PAL DVD files into NTSC and it looked like it wasn't that simple a task. ymmv. But, yes, getting a region free PAL/NTSC standalone player is the simplest and best overall solution. I have 3. Quote
smalltownfart Posted January 20, 2006 at 08:20 PM Report Posted January 20, 2006 at 08:20 PM Does the Philips player output in NTSC? I have a player that plays PAL discs as well as NTSC, but the problem is, if the disc was PAL, the output from the player was also PAL. Since my TV is NTSC only, I get "too-long" black and white video. So I hope this player can output in NTSC from a PAL disc, can someone confirm? Quote
laolee Posted January 20, 2006 at 08:30 PM Report Posted January 20, 2006 at 08:30 PM Yes, the Philips 642 will do a PAL/NTSC conversion to your NTSC TV. So will the Daewoo 9200N and the Cyberhome 500. Once thing to look out for, some older models can't do BOTH PAL/NTSC conversion and the anamorphic conversion. So if you have a PAL anamorphic disc, it will do the PAL/NTSC conversion but not the anamorphic conversion and your picture will look squeezed. (Though your TV might be able to depending on your model.) I think the three above and most current models will do it but just to let you know. I have a couple older players that won't (Daewoo 5800 or 5900, Sampo 620). Quote
