Kristy Posted January 19, 2006 at 11:29 PM Report Share Posted January 19, 2006 at 11:29 PM Does anyone in the UK have a mobile phone that will send and receive text messages in simplified Chinese? If so, how did you get the language pack added to your phone?
adrianlondon Posted January 20, 2006 at 11:33 AM Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 11:33 AM I don't think it's possible. You can get a chinese phone (with chinese menus) but I think even these send messsages in English.
adrianlondon Posted January 20, 2006 at 11:33 AM Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 11:33 AM umm - using the western alphabet I mean. You can, of course type whatever you like
dan ni er Posted January 20, 2006 at 02:37 PM Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 02:37 PM I think it is possible. I remember when I first got back from China I planned on finding loads of Chinese friends and went to Carphone warehouse, phones 4 u etc and they told me I can download the software from Nokia's website.....however I never got round to doing it!. On a sidepoint, where do the two of you study Chinese in London. I'm going to evening classes at soas at the moment, but wondering if there's anywhere else good out there? adrianlondon Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:21 PM Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:21 PM But - do you type pinyin using T9-input or something? It'd be a nightmare And I wonder how many "slots" (out of the available 256 characters) in an SMS each chinese character would use? I live virtually next to SOAS but don't study there (if you were asking me, that is). A friend of mine used to teach (Mandarin and Taiwanese) there, and for nearly two years, during term time, he taught me at home for 1.5 hours a week. I paid, but a "friend's" rate. I stopped being taught a year ago as I was forgetting more each week than I was learning. I do study sometimes, just to make sure I keep up to the level he taught me to, but other than that I'm no longer actually learning. I'm going to Beijing later this year for that. geraldc Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:24 PM Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:24 PM If you go down Shaftsbury Avenue, the Chinese mobile phone shops there can change your operating system to add Chinese language input to your phone (assuming it's compatible)
adrianlondon Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:39 PM Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 04:39 PM Just checked ... An SMS can contain 70 chinese characters. According to Sony Ericsson's website, "a chinese word contains on average 1.6 characters". Hmm - I'm going to start a separate thread ... Kristy Posted January 20, 2006 at 09:59 PM Author Report Share Posted January 20, 2006 at 09:59 PM thanks guys. I've now found a shop that says they can add simplified Chinese to most new Nokia phones, so I'll check that out.
