Excuse my ignorance, but can you explain the word 玉米 in this context. The only meaning I know is corn. (And don`t be like Timmy, the Taiwanese boy in my music theory class in high school. It was bad enough he always untied my shoes when I wasn´t looking. But then he taught me to say "Wo tai ben!" in Chinese and said it meant "Good afternoon." He laughed every time I said it. But now I know what it means, Timmy, and I´m gonna laugh last. So if you lie to me abt what the word means I´ll find out eventually!) Thanks!

I think it's a play on 宇 (yu3) in her name and 迷 (mi2) (meaning fan).

According to wikipedia, it's "宇迷的谐音."

Do "粉丝", another new-fangled word for "fans"? It's a natural progression from 粉丝 to 玉米.
