stephanhodges Posted January 25, 2006 at 07:55 PM Report Posted January 25, 2006 at 07:55 PM I'm having a hard time finding some of the vocabulary to describe a recent couple of trips to the dentist for my upcoming chinese class. I can find some easy ones, like 牙 yá tooth, and 牙医 yá yī dentist, etc. Could people give me a few other "useful" terms and phrases? Also, tips on how to find chinese translations of these "more obscure" words on the internet? These will probably come in handy for me when I get to China too! toothache cracked tooth filling crown drill nerves (in the tooth, and in the jaw) anasthetic novacaine (a specific anasthetic, which I can't use, which is why I wanted to know it's name) dental hygenist (the person who cleans your teeth) dental assistant (who helps the dentist when working on teeth) Thanks much! skylee Posted January 26, 2006 at 06:04 AM Report Posted January 26, 2006 at 06:04 AM Re novocaine. The name in Chinese should be 奴佛卡因 or 普鲁卡因 (for Procaine) based on these webpages -> http://51qe.cn/pic/10/16/24/12/002.htm http://www.xqhospital.com.cn/drug/drug0202.asp?ID=797&class=&class1=&class2=&class3= http://www.hifda.gov.cn:1080/default.aspx?Act=SM&v=&Page=739 Quote
stephanhodges Posted January 26, 2006 at 02:10 PM Author Report Posted January 26, 2006 at 02:10 PM Thanks both! Not sure I understand why "dental doctor" could be correct for hygenist. A hygenist (AFAIK) doesn't need very much training, compared to either a dentist, or a dental assistant. Quote
skylee Posted January 26, 2006 at 02:29 PM Report Posted January 26, 2006 at 02:29 PM Re dental hygenist. In Hong Kong Laws, the Chinese for this term is 牙齒衞生員. If you are interested you can search in the Hong Kong Bilingual Laws Information System for Chapter 156B. Quote
stephanhodges Posted January 26, 2006 at 03:50 PM Author Report Posted January 26, 2006 at 03:50 PM Thanks for the link! One of my problems is that I was using an american spelling. Apparently the required spelling is "hygienist" (note the "i") Quote
