(JR) Posted January 28, 2006 at 07:01 PM Report Posted January 28, 2006 at 07:01 PM Does anyone know how to say "agnostic" in Chinese? or have a dictionary that contains the term? I know that atheism is 無神論, but that's not what I'm looking for. In Japanese agnostic is 不可知論, so it could possibly be that, but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance. Quote
HashiriKata Posted January 28, 2006 at 08:57 PM Report Posted January 28, 2006 at 08:57 PM My Chinese dictionary shows the same: Noun: 不可知論者 Adjective: 不可知論者的 Quote
jbiesnecker Posted January 29, 2006 at 12:31 AM Report Posted January 29, 2006 at 12:31 AM Wenlin also has 'agnosticism' as 不可知论. Looks like that's the winner. Quote
zhwj Posted January 29, 2006 at 04:53 AM Report Posted January 29, 2006 at 04:53 AM There's another up-and-coming term: 疑神论, which makes the distinction between 有神论 and 无神论 clearer. Well-known skeptic Fang Zhouzi puts the following note at the top of his translation of Bertrand Russell's "What is an agnostic?": 译按:agnostic通译为“不可知论者”,但在中国的哲学课本中,不可知论者指的是认为世界不可知、不可认识的人,而罗素并非这样的“不可知论者”。此处的agnostic指的是怀疑神的存在的人,故我最初把它译成“怀疑论者”。后又有人指出“怀疑论者”在哲学上另有所指,现改译成“疑神论者”,与“有神论者”、“无神论者”相对。(found here, but originally on the blocked-in-china XYS site) Quote
