libertango Posted February 1, 2006 at 07:21 PM Report Posted February 1, 2006 at 07:21 PM I'd like to study at a Chinese University...here is my background... I have a major in Philosophy, minor in Chinese. My minor (Chinese) GPA is 4.0..but my major GPA is probally less than 3.0... and my overall GPA is 3.0 I have not taken the HSK yet. I currently live in China...I can't speak with limitations..I'm not sure what level "fluency" is really.... I can read novels, though painfully slow. I'm looking for a program that will give me a professional command of the Chinese language. Not just a few advanced speaking courses... I want to be able to write professionally, read and understand advanced literature, philosophy, poetry... Basically, I want complete mastery of the language...the way that many of our foreign profs at american universities have of English. Ofcourse, I want to pass the HSK advance. If anyone could suggest universities to look into, I would appreciate it. Quote

imron Posted February 1, 2006 at 11:43 PM Report Posted February 1, 2006 at 11:43 PM If you can afford it, the IUP program seems to be the way to go. Quote
amandagmu Posted February 2, 2006 at 01:52 AM Report Posted February 2, 2006 at 01:52 AM I agree. IUP (InterUniversity Program at Qinghua, google for the website) is the best for what you wish. They train people in doctoral (PhD) programs and they are world-known for this. Amanda Quote
roddy Posted February 2, 2006 at 02:28 AM Report Posted February 2, 2006 at 02:28 AM Does IUP cover stuff like literature and philosophy? I've always had the impression that they are very focused on practical language skills, but I could easily be wrong. Quote
wushijiao Posted February 2, 2006 at 03:02 AM Report Posted February 2, 2006 at 03:02 AM It seems like the deadline for the IUP Academic Year and Semester Programs (Jan. 11th) has passed. Who knows if that is set in stone though. Quote
amandagmu Posted February 3, 2006 at 03:16 AM Report Posted February 3, 2006 at 03:16 AM IUP has a program in Taipei too. They have the capability to train people in the language in areas besides so-called "practical" language skills. The universities here (in the U.S., that is) send students from history doctoral programs to the IUP program for a full year precisely to study that which is not necessarily practical in the modern world. Rather, they need students to come back home with the ability to read Qing dynasty documents and such. You can only do this if you have an extremely solid background in reading skills. So, I'm by no means saying you would read Qing dynasty or old documents in the program, but you would come back with a strong enough grasp of reading characters so that you would be able to do this without too many troubles. In fact, I hope to eventually attend the program (in another year or two). Quote
