TSkillet Posted January 23, 2004 at 11:26 PM Report Posted January 23, 2004 at 11:26 PM I'm a pretty big hip-hop/rap music fan, but I have to say, I find most Chinese hip-hop pretty silly sounding - it always makes me cringe a bit when I first hear it. That being said - I wanted to make special note of the now-broken up LMF, I had bought their last album in August (last time I was in Hong Kong) but I never really listened to it until recently. It's really really really really good. Too bad they broke up. Quote

Guest brad Posted February 1, 2004 at 02:56 PM Report Posted February 1, 2004 at 02:56 PM What are some good hip-hop groups in Taiwan? MC Hotdog was good a couple of years ago -- why did they stop releasing CDs? Did they break up? Tie Zhu Tang (铁竹堂) sucks. Fake gangsta rap in English, Chinese, and French. Then a couple of typical R&B tracks, with a "Jesus Loves Me" Christian song thrown in the middle?! Who produced this? DJ Tommy is cool, but I can't find anything after "Respect For Da Chopstick Hiphop" I've been hearing about a group out of Beijing, called YinTsang (隐藏), but the only song of theirs I heard (Zai Beijing) wasn't very good. Guest wennie555 Posted February 2, 2004 at 03:46 PM Report Posted February 2, 2004 at 03:46 PM they are so wicked. but they should speak more mandarin. give up the f^ckin MinnanHua Quote
Quest Posted February 3, 2004 at 12:17 AM Report Posted February 3, 2004 at 12:17 AM they are so wicked. but they should speak more mandarin. give up the f^ckin MinnanHua If they find a market out there, I don't see why they should give up. Why do you think MinnanHua is fxxxxx and mandarin is not? Quote
Guest brad Posted February 3, 2004 at 11:16 AM Report Posted February 3, 2004 at 11:16 AM Probably the main reason they rap in Taiwanese is that they are in Taiwan, selling their CDs to other Taiwanese people. A lot of their songs are social commentary about life in Taiwan, and they advocate pride in one's home country/province. Quote

niubi Posted February 4, 2004 at 06:39 AM Report Posted February 4, 2004 at 06:39 AM there are a good number of hip-hop, rap bands in the mainlaind. they tend toward the rapcore, rap-rock side of things. i personally like cui jian's rap stylings...and when he raps with fellow bandmate/drummer beibei. they ROCK. there will be more rock'n'rap on his new album...i can't wait! TSkillet Posted February 5, 2004 at 01:19 AM Author Report Posted February 5, 2004 at 01:19 AM brad - DJ Tommy was in LMF (which is a collective) so if you want ot hear more of him - LMF had about 3-5 releases. He was also the Technics World DJ runner-up a few years back Quote
niubi Posted February 5, 2004 at 01:24 AM Report Posted February 5, 2004 at 01:24 AM brad, i don't know where you can find dj tommy's most recent album (Updated Software 2.0 EP & Bonus DVD ) in china, but it is available online at yesasia.com. Quote
Guest brad Posted February 5, 2004 at 06:24 AM Report Posted February 5, 2004 at 06:24 AM Thanks, I have all of LMF's releases -- I count 6, plus a couple of compilations that include them. I'm in Taipei right now, so if anyone knows a good place to find underground hip-hop CDs, I'd appreciate a pointer. Quote
Guest Herbie Posted February 29, 2004 at 07:37 PM Report Posted February 29, 2004 at 07:37 PM Okay, the "Yin ts'ang" track isn't that hot but then again i recorded, produced and wrote most of the arrangements on the album in my living room.. there was no flashy studio, foam on the walls or even vocal booth. It's a hip hop album right ? (well apart from my U.K remix on the end) That's past, new studio, rappers and Synclavier............ hold tight! Quote

recycle_bean Posted February 28, 2005 at 05:28 AM Report Posted February 28, 2005 at 05:28 AM I really appreciate LMF and I do like them. Are they broken up? what a shame... any link to the news? please post. The problem is majority of Hong Kong people only like pop music, it's hard for real hip-hop shit to survive. Look at most of the HK mofo on the stage, most of them just know how to stand still and sing love songs... arrr.. In my opionon, despite the fact LMF is gone, there is still a long way for cantonese rap/hiphop shit to go, ya know wut i'm sayin'? Compare to Eminem (if you don't know who is Eminem, don't tell me u know hiphop.. LOL!!!) It's just like you are taking made-in-HK movie vs Hollywood movie. They are in different category, from music, lyric to rhyme skills, just can't compare. I have tried to listen to mandarin hiphop, yeah.. it's really cool, the rhyme is better than cantonese, probably because of the language itself. But since I aint a mandarin speaker, I dunno wut da fuca are they rapping abt. LMAO.. Quote
ThePhatGentleman Posted March 2, 2005 at 06:36 PM Report Posted March 2, 2005 at 06:36 PM Yo, Em sucks. That guy is not Hip Hop. He makes money off of the cheapest gimmicks. I will say that I don't believe in the whole long way to go bit. I think talent is talent. You do something blow up. I will say, that hard work is what matters. Music is not about worrying how long the journey is, its about enjoying the journey. There a lot of acts that decent, but don't go anywhere. Sometimes the music business is just luck. Quote
Adam Posted March 3, 2005 at 10:41 PM Report Posted March 3, 2005 at 10:41 PM anyone else heard of 大支 from taiwan? Yeh MC Hotdog is in the army at the moment, but apparently 大支 is part of his crew. There's one track where 大支 raps with korean and canto rappers, good stuff. Quote

yuehan Posted March 27, 2005 at 09:33 PM Report Posted March 27, 2005 at 09:33 PM I just stumbled over Jin's "Learn Chinese", i find it quite motivating for a beginner like me. You can download it here and here's the lyrics: Yeah, I'm Chinese and what? Yeah, you know who this is, Jin Let me tell you this The days of the pork fried rice and the chicken wings coming to your house five years is over [Chorus] Ya'll gonna learn Chinese Ya'll gonna learn Chinese Ya'll gonna learn Chinese When the pumps come out, ya'll gon' speak Chinese Ya'll gonna learn Chinese Ya'll gonna wanna be Chinese Ya'll gonna learn Chinese When the pumps go off, ya'll gon' speak Chinese [Jin] Go fuck with your head man I know a bunch of crypts that love Redman Blood book in New York man things done change Stop, the chinks be all over the game This ain't Bruce Lee, I watch too much TV This is a game of death when I aim for your chest Too much sex got me seeing slow motion Eyes barely open with a roach roasting' And your girl, she loves the gin ocean Rub it on her body like body shop lotion What's the commotion, you never seen me? The original chinky eye emcee You don't want to step to the army And Double-R rank refugee And the battle of the gun is gonna make you speak another language And amigo I ain't talking about Spanish [Chorus] [Jin] This one goes out to those that order four chicken wings And pork fried rice and throw dice In the hood, you think this is all good? Till the cowboys roam through like Clint Eastwood I wish you would come to Chinatown Get lost in town, end up in the lost in found Eyewitnesses, you must be crazy We don't speak English, we speak Chinese And the only po-po we know is the pigs on the hood out in the window Every time they harass me, I wanna explode We should ride the train for free, we built the railroads I ain't ya 50 Cent, I ain't ya Enimem I ain't ya Jigga Man, I'm a chinaman Ginseng in the palm of my hand She looks suprirsed in the palm of my hands You know what's next? Safe sex I'll be damned if I sleep in the flesh with the insect [Hook] (Woman singing) (Jin speaking Chinese: This one sounds good. Let's give her a call on the phone.) Mr. Jin, you are the sexist man Mr. Jin, I love the way you do your things (Jin speaking Chinese: Really?) Mr. Jin, you are the sexist man Mr. Jin, I love the way you do your things [Jin] The moral of the story is Don't judge a book by its cover I know you think he's fam, but he's really undercover I saw his name on the affidavit It was written in Chinese and this is what he said: (Jin Speaking Chinese: The chinese restaurant is closing soon) Bring about some local hooligans and thugs so Catch them at midnight when they close the shop up Reading the Ten Commandments, cooking up heckka Movie small posters are all over the walls If they think you'd save me the bullet, it's so over ya'll Me, I'm just Jin just doing my thang Just doing my thang, just doing my thang Why is there beef everywhere I go? I'm drunk skewing, can't we all get along My ladies with the thongs, my thugs with the firearms Ya'll gonna learn Chinese (Wyclef: all the ghetto) Ya'll gonna learn Chinese (Wyclef: all the suburb) Ya'll gonna learn Chinese When the pumps come out, ya'll gon' speak Chinese. (Wyclef: Refugees) Ya'll gonna learn Chinese (Jin speaking Chinese: di lo) Ya'll gonna learn Chinese (Jin speaking Chinese: Hurry, get out of here) Ya'll gonna learn Chinese When the pumps come out, ya'll gon' speak Chines Quote
