Ian_Lee Posted January 26, 2004 at 07:29 PM Report Posted January 26, 2004 at 07:29 PM Where should you send your kid to learn Chinese on weekend if you are in Northern America or Western Europe? If you don't like those for-profit schools in Chinatown, the schools operated by Tzu Chi Foundation may be a good choice. Tzu Chi is a Buddhist charitable organization that has branches worldwide with its base in Taiwan. Their schools are usually located within the residential neighborhood in most suburbs. In addition to the language courses, they also offer a lot of cultural activities like calligarphy, Chinese painting, chess, dance,....etc. Moreover, they have celebrations on special days like Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival. Of course, there is some Buddhist teaching. But the teachers don't engage in hard-sell. The tuition is lower generally than what the Chinatown schools charge. They offer both hanyu pinyin and bopomofo classes. Quote
