randall_flagg Posted February 27, 2006 at 08:24 AM Report Share Posted February 27, 2006 at 08:24 AM Hi! I just got an email my computer could not decode. Ah! Firefox and Internet Explorer both didn't do the trick. I usually don't have any of these problems, so I think it is weird that I can't read this email. I tried: GB 18030, GBK, GB 2312, EUC-TW, ISO-2022-CN, H2, Big5, nothing worked. I want to read this email. What else could I do? This is what it looks like: ²æ们Ìé²Ä°ÊÄó¶¡简单Ū¼«¹Ô车领队¡£°ø为你ǽ说×̹¥ÅªÃæʸ¡¤½ê°Ê²æ们Âþ¼ûÍ×°ÂÇÓ罗 ´ç带领¡£这样ǽ够节约±Ñ语领队Ū费ÍÑ¡£ÉÔÍѱÑ语领队. This is what it looks like when running GB 2312 over it. 叉们涕材笆捏丁简单弄极乖车领队。傍为你墙说滋攻弄面矢·疥笆叉们漫见妥奥怯罗 寸带领。这样墙够节约毖语领队弄费脱。稍脱毖语领队. ANY help would be greatly appreciated! (Hope the sentence above doesn't contain any delecate information)
HashiriKata Posted February 27, 2006 at 08:53 AM Report Share Posted February 27, 2006 at 08:53 AM If my Chinese is worth any penny, I'd say that even GB 2312 doesn't help at all. However, I remember reading somewhere where you can just paste in your scrambled message and it will sort it out for you. I think Travelyan & Roddy know what I'm talking about and may be able to point you to the right direction.

So there you go. Are you sure it's a real email and not spam? I get gibberish English spam, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's gibberish Chinese spam. Edit: after reading below about trying Japanese encoding, I tried this and got . . . 我是来自火星的一位政府官员。我在火星银行里有一百万外民币。我想把钱转到你们的地球。你能帮我吗? Strange, can anyone make sense of it? zhwj Posted February 27, 2006 at 05:17 PM Report Share Posted February 27, 2006 at 05:17 PM Undecodable email of this sort (recognizable elements among gibberish) seems to result from problems on the sender's end - occasionally I'll get stuff sent in one encoding that has quoted stuff from another encoding, and it's essentially unrecoverable. Here, except for that 你, all the characters are simplifications - I can't really come up with a scenario that would have produced this result, however. This page suggests that Japanese encoding may be useful in certain situations. Here, it doesn't seem to work, but I'd try it on the original, just in case forum posting has messed it up somehow. Can you ask for it to be resent? That's probably the best way to go about it... Although, going Dancing Men on it, I'd guess the the message concerns ways to cut expenses of foreign-language group leaders through the selection of leadership to make foreign-language leaders possible. You (the recipient) are involved due to your language skills.
randall_flagg Posted February 27, 2006 at 10:57 PM Author Report Share Posted February 27, 2006 at 10:57 PM zhwj, thanks for your suggestion, but the Japanese encoding didn't do it for this one, either. As to your guess on what that sentence means... I think you are waaay off. I'd very, very surprised to learn that the other end was trying to tell me this! I promise that should I find a solution to this problem, I'll let the forum know. For the benefit of mankind, so to speak.
atitarev Posted February 28, 2006 at 01:00 AM Report Share Posted February 28, 2006 at 01:00 AM UTF-8 isn't on your list, have you tried it? I sometimes get emails that I can only decipher using this encoding (Unicode).
randall_flagg Posted March 11, 2006 at 09:18 AM Author Report Share Posted March 11, 2006 at 09:18 AM Thank you for your help, everybody. The problem has not really been solved, I just asked the other party to re-send the email. Worked just fine that time. Weird, don't you think? Well anyway, I got the email and that's all I wanted. New Members maxiewawa Posted June 30, 2011 at 10:08 AM New Members Report Share Posted June 30, 2011 at 10:08 AM Hilarious. 我是来自火星的一位政府官员。我在火星银行里有一百万外民币。我想把钱转到你们的地球。你能帮我吗? ^From post #4 This translates to: I'm a government official from Mars. I have a million Martian Dollars in the bank of Mars. I want to transfer it to Earth. Can you help? Martian Dollars isn't a literal translation, but you get the picture. Quite an old thread, but so hilarious that I joined up just to clear up this funny misunderstanding. Either someone is playing a joke on us, or the Martians are learning Chinese now.
