i usualy say something like: 住在中国的时候。。

I can get away with it, but tis not so smooth. My real problems arize when I want to say something casualy like.. , what if I want to say, when I was at the intersection (earlier today)

Second question:

- I tried(tried but failed)

, or something like "I will try"

you can say

在中国的时候

在十字路口的时候/在过马路的时候
