initialize Posted February 28, 2006 at 11:28 PM Report Posted February 28, 2006 at 11:28 PM I started taking Chinese at the beginning of the year, so I really don't know word order. I've been given a worksheet, which seems sort of complicated. Please help- and you only need to put the pinyin (I'll figure out the tones) 1. Yee Laoshi like to read. 2. How do you spell zhun? 3. I can't read this character. Please write it again. 4. Pay attention to stroke order. 5. What is this character? 6. Look up the radical "ren." 7. What is the same meaning as "nianshu?" 8. I don't understand Chinese grammar. 9. What book are you reading? 10. Where do you study? 11. What radical do you look up for this character? 12. That man is probably German. 13. He uses a writing brush to write characters. 14.She says my accent resembles a Chinese person. 15. Pay attention to what the teacher says. 16. How do you know? 17. How do you write this character? 18. He will come. 19. What does this radical mean? Sorry, I know this is asking a lot but I really need help. Quote

necroflux Posted March 1, 2006 at 06:57 AM Report Posted March 1, 2006 at 06:57 AM This is actually great practice, we should do exercises like this more often. Semantic, there are a few discrepancies between what I came up with and your results, which I listed below. Can you comment on the differences at all? 7. (zhu4yi4 lao3shi1 shuo1 de hua4.) Quote
semantic nuance Posted March 1, 2006 at 07:28 AM Report Posted March 1, 2006 at 07:28 AM To Phoebe_lq: Thanks for the correction. I am not familiar with han yu pinyin, for I learned bmpf since I was a kid. I had to take out my sheet of hanyu pin in front of me to type all of the questions initialize asked. It was in the morning, so I must have been typing them with a dizzy head. To necroflux: 7. 唸書這個字還有什麼辦法可以說? If I were you, I would use :唸書這個字還有什麼其他說法(可以說)? 辦法 is a method or a way or an idea to solve the problem. Here, it doesn't sound like solving a problem. You can say: 這件事還有什麼其他辦法可以解決. 11. 你得用什麼部首查這個字? sounds ok to me. If I have to tell the difference, I will pick the word '得dei3'. It means 'must'. What radical must I check this word with? It seems too serious. I'll say 你要用什麼部首查這個字? or 你可以用什麼部首查這個字? I would like to compare a related usage of 得(de2) with 得 (dei3). 得de2 is used in formal writing, meaning 'be able to'. Sometimes when 得 appears in a formal article, if you read it by the meaning of 得 de2 or得dei3, the meaning will be completely different. 12. 那個人大概是德國人. Yes, you can use Chinese that way. But to me, 大概 is not probably. In English, if I remember all right, possibly is different from probably. Possibly is with a lesser degree than probably. That's why I used 很有可能, because it meant it was most likely that he's a german. Do you get me? But if you say 那個人大概是德國人. is 100% correct in chinese. 14. 他說我的腔調聽起來像中國人 Yes, your version is better than mine. 15. 注意老師說的話. (zhu4yi4 lao3shi1 shuo1 de hua4.) Once again, yours is much better than mine. Perhaps i should add聽in the original sentence:. zhu4 yi4 ting1 lao3 shi1 zai4 shuo1 shen2 me5. Hope it helps! Sorry for the mistakes due to haste. Quote
necroflux Posted March 1, 2006 at 07:37 AM Report Posted March 1, 2006 at 07:37 AM Awesome semantic, thanks so much for clearing that stuff up. As for 得, do people usually write with 應該 to avoid the confusion? I have heard that 得 (dei3) is used more often in speech but I never knew why. Thanks for the clarification on 大概. I thought this was closer to probably than it is. So would you say the correct order, in order of increasing likelihood, of the following is: 也許, 大概, 有可能, 很有可能 Quote
semantic nuance Posted March 1, 2006 at 07:46 AM Report Posted March 1, 2006 at 07:46 AM Hi necroflux, 應該is'should', though it's a bit imposing to me ,still it's a suggestion. However, 得dei3 is 'must','have to', sounding like there's no way to negotiate at all. Read the follwing sentences: 你應該要去。 You should go. 你得去. You have to go. You must go. The first three are the same to me. 也許, 大概, 有可能, you can replace them with perhaps, possibly, maybe. But 很有可能, meaning that something is nearly certain, which I will use 'probably'. Hope you understand me. Quote
