Ian_Lee Posted March 9, 2006 at 07:55 PM Report Posted March 9, 2006 at 07:55 PM Just curious, does fellow poster know anybody study Portuguese language at the University of Macau? It seems that the University has an adequately staffed Portuguese Language Department offering full academic programs with faculty coming from Portugal and Brazil: http://www.umac.mo/fsh/dp/ http://www.umac.mo/fsh/dp/dp_aca_staff.html Quote

carlo Posted March 11, 2006 at 10:10 AM Report Posted March 11, 2006 at 10:10 AM Do people there still learn Portuguese *before* university? Street signs in Macau are all in Portuguese, yet I still have to meet a Macanese who speaks it. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted March 11, 2006 at 09:25 PM Author Report Posted March 11, 2006 at 09:25 PM I think Macanese (those with pure Portuguese blood and mixed blood) still speak Portuguese. When I dined in the authentic Portuguese restaurants in Macau, I always heard Portuguese spoken between the boss and their friends. But unlike Britons in HK, the Portuguese in Macau are very immersed in the society that most Macanese can also speak Cantonese. Quote
