I agree with Imron that 石头 is officially romanised as shítou, although I think southern Chinese often pronounce it shítóu.

Anyway, is there going to be someone doing the Cantonese version soon?

Hi all thanx for the feedback, keep them coming!

I would consider increasing the size of the font for Chinese characters. Using Firefox and going through the Preview section, the characters are tiny. Of course with Firefox I can always manually increase the font size, but it'd be nice if it was done automatically.

I see, I'll try and suggest to my boss =p

Also, I'm not sure what your source is, however in level 1, I noticed a couple of discrepancies between Albis and my Xiandai Hanyu Cidian - not sure if this is just due to differences between Singapore/Mainland Mandarin.

Well...haha the source is yours truly , anyway sorry for some of the tones, I may have made a couple of mistakes here and there, feel free to point out, and by the way, I do say shi2 tou2 instead of shi2 tou5 =p

Also, one other thing regarding the pinyin, for shǔi the tone should appear over the i - shuǐ and not the u.

Well this system is programmed by my boss, my inputs are in numbers, I'll feedback to him =)

If you want to Albis be taken seriously as a tool for learning Mandarin, it's vital to make sure the information you're providing is error free, otherwise people won't have confidence in your program.

Copy that, thanks

Well I think we'll concentrate on the Mandarin version first before moving on to Cantonese

A useful and simple algorithm to follow when writing a program that will automatically place the tone mark in the correct position, is the one listed in wikipedia.

hiya,

it's always nice to see new resources being created, but i think this one has some problems, along with a lot of flashcard systems. it doesn't allow for any difference, eg. leaf is translated as yezi, which is fine, but you could also say shuye and a chinese person would understand you. it all depends on context. also, the first word that popped up was valley and the way the word was shown in pinyin would give someone the wrong idea of how to pronounce it. not shang u but shan gu.

sorry to be critical, but hope it helps.

wow, this site is very well done!

but i think it might be more useful to put the words in selectable categorys or something like that?

As a chinese-beginner I'm not very interested in learning everything about nature?

I want to learn greetings and so on

And a printable version for learning would be cool, too!

But anyway very very good job ;)

gratz
