I am looking for a reasonably priced medical insurance policy while I live in China. I am willing to take the boo-boo's and owies of life to the local Chinese hospitals but I am concerned if anything more serious happens - i would like to have some options. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you know anyone who's actually made a claim with William Russel? I've been with them for years, and I'm always curious as to how good they'd be if I ever needed them.

I've never made a claim with them myself but I know a couple of people who have and they had no complaints. Apparently quite a few of the expat clinics in Beijing have automatic billing set up so you don't need to pay and then claim back ... which is handy :)

i went with world nomads after several months of research. haven't made a claim yet, so

can give no advice from experience. still, they take your money painlessly. from what

i've read, they are legitimate and provide good service.

What is your country of origin? I simply used my French health insurance with CFE. It worked fine. They accepted all my receipts written entirely in Chinese without questioning any of them. (I had worse experience with CFE when I lived in the States, but even there the money finally made it to my bank account.)

Here in the worldnomads website it says:

"World Nomads Travel Insurance is available to residents of the following countries. Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and United States residents can buy cover for trips anywhere in the world. Residents of all other countries can still buy cover for the whole duration of their trip as long as they intend to travel to Australia or New Zealand during the course of that trip."

I asked them if what that meant - how as a uk resident could i demonstrate my intention of going to Australia or New Zealand, and what if i failed to do this. They never got back to me... :-S

i just had another look at their website: if you're an australia, NZ, UK and US residents you don't "need to intending to visit Australia or New Zealand as part of your journey". that's only for residents of other countries.

i also noticed the average monthly premium goes down and then UP for trips over about a year. so it can make sense to take a shorter policy and then renew ;-)
