anonymoose Posted March 19, 2006 at 06:46 PM Report Posted March 19, 2006 at 06:46 PM I got this sentence from a page off the internet: 可是,我打了校长,现在又欢迎他复职,不是叫人看着自相矛盾吗? How would one translate 不是叫人看着自相矛盾吗 into English, and what is the general grammatical structure here (in the 叫人看着自相矛盾 part)? Thanks. Quote
HashiriKata Posted March 19, 2006 at 07:20 PM Report Posted March 19, 2006 at 07:20 PM 1. Translation: 不是叫人看着自相矛盾吗 = Wouldn't this cause people to think that I'm self-contradictory? (Or: Wouldn't this cause people to see it as a self-contradiction?) 2. Grammar: 叫= cause; 人= people; 看着= see, think; 自相矛盾= self-contradictory (自相矛盾 is a proverb) Quote
anonymoose Posted March 19, 2006 at 08:16 PM Author Report Posted March 19, 2006 at 08:16 PM Thanks, Hashiri, for your reply. So how is 着 pronounced here? Is the use of 看着 specific to this kind of construction? Could one use 认为 here instead of 看着? I think the problem I'm having here is with the 看着 part Quote
HashiriKata Posted March 20, 2006 at 08:53 AM Report Posted March 20, 2006 at 08:53 AM I think the problem I'm having here is with the 看着 part Ok, this is as much as I can tell: 着 here is pronounced as "zhe", it's the suffix you add to a verb to indicate duration. Quote
