Harvey Posted March 29, 2006 at 10:32 PM Report Share Posted March 29, 2006 at 10:32 PM Hello everyone. I would like to get recommendations on a Palm PDA, which I would get in order to upgrade my current m505... and also allow me to start using Pelco software. I am an avid Palm user and not considering a Windows CE-ish device. Does anyone here live on a Palm device they are passionate about? I heard rumors that Palm was coming out with a new OS "soon". Has anyone heard of this? Would it be advised that I wait until this new version was released before upgrading? I plan to also use the, I believe it is called CJK-OS, to allow me to handle Japanese Chinese and (dont need it tho) Korean fonts. If the device had Wireless Lan (802.1x) it would be very handy. I would like to be able to use random hotspots to grab my email or surf the web. - Harvey
novemberfog Posted March 30, 2006 at 03:21 AM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 03:21 AM I have a model from two years ago that I really like, the Palm Tungstun E. It has a color UI, and a reasonable amount of screenspace. I bought it for use with Pleco, and thought I woudl use it as an organizer as well, but now it just services as my dictionary. Not sure what palm offers these days, but a low end color model would do the job just fine.
novemberfog Posted March 30, 2006 at 03:24 AM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 03:24 AM You might try getting a Clie while still in Japan. I understand some of the models have really good built in dictionaries for Japanese. And then if you had Pleco as well, you would be all set. roddy Posted March 30, 2006 at 10:45 AM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 10:45 AM I've used both a T3 and a T5 with Plecodict and had great results. If I was buying now I'd probably go with a TX for the built in wireless, although I might be tempted by a smart phone. I've never really looked at non-Palm Palm OS PDAs though, so I'm not too sure what's out there.
stephanhodges Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:19 PM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:19 PM I have a Palm OS device with an extended screen size (screen includes the soft button region), and Pleco supports that too, which lets you see alot more on the screen at once. The device isn't manufactured any more, so I'm not sure about recommending it. It's a zodiac. However, I'd recommend something with a large screen. Harvey Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:22 PM Author Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:22 PM Thanks for the info guys. I am currently hooked on my m505 as an organizer, so I'm sure I would also use the organizer features on mynext one as well. after reading reviews of the Tungsten Clie kind of died in Japan. A few years ago they would release a new model every month it seemed, but they have really gone out of style lately. http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/_palmone_tungsten_t5_review http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/palm_t_x What is up with this OS 6 stuff? When will it be released?? I WANT NOW. Heh. After reading around the Tungsten TX does look appealing. I think this is the one I'll go with... as soon as I can find out when OS6 comes out. It might be worth waiting...
hbuchtel Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:31 PM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:31 PM Which ever one you get, make sure you buy it in China. It'll come with CJKOS installed in the ROM, saving you $50 and a couple megs of memory:) Henry
sui.generis Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:36 PM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:36 PM OS6 has been ready to be implemented for over a year, but will likely never be put on a handheld or smartphone of any kind because it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. The next expected implementation of the Palm OS is currently code-named ALP, a sort of Palm functionality running on top of a linux kernel, and that won't happen until 2007 if they're quick about. The Software arm of palm was purchased by Access, and so Palm inc no longer controls the OS as it once did. Whatever happens, waiting would entail a long period of time, possibly years. I have a TX, and while I haven't migrated Pleco to it yet, I do love it. I recommend it if you really want another palm os device.
gato Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:45 PM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:45 PM The CLIE was discontinued about a year ago, shortly after I bought a TH55 (whose battery life of 10+ hours is very nice). http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=gmail&q=clie%20discontinued
skylee Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:50 PM Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 01:50 PM Thanks Harvey and gato for confirming what I've heard about Clie. Mine is a T655C/H and I loved it.
Harvey Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:42 PM Author Report Share Posted March 30, 2006 at 02:42 PM I think I will go with the Tungsten TX. Thanks for all the advice guys. About the CJKOS... 50$? Isn't it free? http://www.dyts.com/en/cjkos.html This doesn't mention the Tungsten... this doesn't work anymore? Oh. Shareware. Oh, but 28$. http://www.dyts.com/en/order.html Actually if I can find a place to pick this up in Japan I just might do that if the price isn't more expensive than in the US... http://www.expansys.jp/product.asp?code=126792 DOH! 当社販売価格: ¥34,211 which is like... Hey what do you know. That's pretty good. Seems if I order online now from Palm I can get free shipping and a free hardcase! Something tells me that free shipping to Japan won't happen tho ;-) .... NOTE: Items in the Palm Store USA Catalog are priced in US Dollars and are for deliverywithin the USA Only. DOH! http://store.palm.com/home/index.jsp Gotta have a RhinoSkin case.... http://www.saunders-usa.com/rhinoskin/?brand=10&model=234 Hrm.... Harvey Posted April 1, 2006 at 11:35 AM Author Report Share Posted April 1, 2006 at 11:35 AM Could anyone with a Tungsten tell me how it is at reading PDF files? I heard that is some software that will convert PDF's into a PDA readable format. I am specifically wondering, how the PDA would do at reading PDF's from this site. http://www.eldis.org/ Such as... http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0014/001412/141221e.pdf If anyone could give a shot to reading this with a Tungsten it would be greatly appreciated!!! - Harvey
novemberfog Posted April 2, 2006 at 11:56 PM Report Share Posted April 2, 2006 at 11:56 PM Mine doesn't seem to come with a PDF reader installed by default. If you can point me to a free program that can do it, I will try it out. I have a feeling that a PDF like the one you want to test is going to be "heavy" due to its size.. Probably like viewing a PDF on mobile phones. I have a DoCoMo model from autumn, and PDFs are still a bit heavy if they have lots of graphics. badr Posted April 8, 2006 at 07:15 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2006 at 07:15 AM I just got myself the Palm LifeDrive and i love it. Pleco comes in handy and the built in wi-fi is fantastic for checking email in the many places that provide hot-spots in BJ. As far as pdf support goes, Adobe has a reader and converter (both free) available for download on their website. Also, the new version of docs to go supports pdf viewing. gato Posted April 29, 2006 at 11:05 PM Report Share Posted April 29, 2006 at 11:05 PM I'm going to be in Taiwan next week, and planning to pick up a Palm TX while there so I can get started with Pleco! If it has a Chinese OS pre-installed, make sure it can display both traditional and simplified characters. I'm pretty sure that would be the case. Just double-check. Harvey Posted April 29, 2006 at 11:29 PM Author Report Share Posted April 29, 2006 at 11:29 PM Oh good call thanks for the tip. Will check. I heard that the PDA's you buy in China/Taiwan come preloaded with CJK OS, is that true?
doumeizhen Posted August 3, 2006 at 03:02 PM Report Share Posted August 3, 2006 at 03:02 PM I was just given my very own Palm Pilot which I will be using for Pleco, and I have a question (and I don't do technology so forgive my language) If I am getting Pleco, does it come with writing recognition software, or will I have to buy and install CJKOS before I can use it? Thanks for any advice! Afterthought: Even if I don't need it, should I get CJKOS anyways for doing things outside of Pleco?
