dougm24 Posted April 11, 2006 at 11:10 PM Report Posted April 11, 2006 at 11:10 PM Hiya Last summer I travelled along the silk road, from Xi'an up through Gansu to Urumqi and then down to Kashgar. I'd like to try travelling the southern silk road sometime this year, going west from Lanzhou through Qinghai to Southern Xinjiang. Has anyone here already visited places along this route, and what were your experiences like? In particular, how does it compare with the northern route for things worth seeing, ease of travelling (my Chinese is hopefully miles better since the last time I was in Xinjiang, and my Uyghur is still non-existent apart from hello and thankyou), how long it's worth taking...Also, does anyone know if there's an ideal time of year, or anytime of year that wouldn't be recommended - last year we spent a couple of very very cold days in Xiahe in Gansu because we weren't prepared for the drop in temperature so would like to be better prepared this time.
