lostinspace Posted April 16, 2006 at 11:04 PM Report Share Posted April 16, 2006 at 11:04 PM Hi, I've been having a bit of trouble knowing whether what I write in Chinese with the correct word order. In paticular I struggle with the word order: 1. ....还有, 你还会记得在学校学习的东西. does this make sense? I'm trying to say: Furthermore, you are able to remember the things you learnt at school (high school) 2. When using 一点 or 一点儿 where does it come - in relation to verb and adjective. ie 挣一点儿钱 i know this makes sense but sometimes you see 便宜一点儿 "cheaper." Are there any rules, or can it be said both ways? 3.For the word other, which is more common 别的 or 其他 ? 4.平常, 我能听父母亲的看法. (Usually, I can listen to my parents opinion. ) 5.我觉得在全世界有许多的机会. (I think the world has many opportunities? ) 6. ....但是年轻人还要决定难的事 (But young people still have to make difficult decisions.) 最后: Can you say both: 中国有河流很多 or 中国有很多河流 The second is more like English. Do these have an identical meaning? If anyone could help clarify some of these points I'd be grateful! Thanks
semantic nuance Posted April 17, 2006 at 02:24 AM Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 at 02:24 AM 1. ....还有, 你还会记得在学校学习的东西. does this make sense? Yes, but according to your English, maybe you could omit '還' in 還會記得. 還 here means 'also'. However, it really depends on your context. If you can offer more detailed context, maybe that sentence is ok. But, it's ok when you use it as it is singly. 2. I'm native Chinese speaker but I don't know about grammar. My instinct of that pattern is ㄧ點點+noun, and adjective+ㄧ點點. For example: 1. ㄧ點點糖 a little more sugar 2. 甜ㄧ點點 a little more sweet 3. They are both common. 4. 4.平常, 我能听父母亲的看法 You can say: 4.平常, 我會听父母亲的看法.About the usage of 會, 可以, and 能, please search in the forum. 5. 我觉得在全世界有许多的机会. 我觉得全世界有许多的机会 is ok. But I would use 我覺得到處都有機會. 到處here is everywhere. 6. ....但是年轻人还要决定难的事 但是年輕人還是得做困難的決定 or 抉擇. 7. We say 中國有很多河流. Or, 中國的河流很多. Hope it helps! sissi Posted April 17, 2006 at 02:43 AM Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 at 02:43 AM 1. Furthermore, you are able to remember the things you learnt at school (high school) Yes.But maybe this is more natural--另外,你还记起在学校学的东西吗 2.The latter is spoken language. 3.The former is unformal, and always used in spoken language. 4. .(Usually, I can listen to my parents opinion. ) 平时,我会征求父母的看法。 5. (But young people still have to make difficult decisions.) 但是年轻人也得做棘手的决定。 6. 最后: Can you say both: 中国有河流很多 or 中国有很多河流 I think both of the two sentences are comprehensible. But the latter is more natural. ddjiii Posted April 17, 2006 at 02:46 AM Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 at 02:46 AM Here are my guesses, but I'm far from an expert: 1: The word order sounds right to me, but I usually think of as 东西being actual physical objects - maybe 事would be better. 2: I think your examples are correct, and the rule is 一点before nouns being modified and after adjectives being modified. 我只有一点钱,请给我多一点。 3. If there's a difference, is 其他 more likely to refer to other things within a defined group?我看了那些书,第一个很好看,其他的都不好看。 4. I think grammatically this is fine, but it sounds odd: 能不能听看法? 5. I would take out 在. 6. I don't think 决定 can take this kind of object. ‘作很难的决定’我认为比较好。 7. I don't think the first is right. 中国有很多河流or中国的河流很多。 But these are just my feelings - what do others think? semantic nuance Posted April 17, 2006 at 03:05 AM Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 at 03:05 AM 平时,我会征求父母的看法。 I don't think 徵求 is euqal to 'listen to'. 徵求 means 'inquire'. If the author meant to inqire his parents' opinion. Then I think 徵求 is correct. But, he meant to say 'listen to my parents' opinion, which means he accepted his parents' opinion. Hope it helps! HashiriKata Posted April 17, 2006 at 06:26 AM Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 at 06:26 AM But these are just my feelings - what do others think?I think you're right and I couldn't find fault with what you've said. Since you think "听看法" sounds odd, how about "平常, 我会听 我父母的话。" ?
hidden12345 Posted April 17, 2006 at 07:00 AM Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 at 07:00 AM for sentence #1- would it be more idiomatic to translate it as such: 而且,你在高中学的题目都记得了. S. Nuance? (sorry for the 簡體字 btw)
