Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop this summer when I go to hk for vacation.

From my experience of using Ebay in the past, it seems that HK has the cheapest electronics.

Can anybody recommend where I should go, and what bargining margin I should use (50% of the quoted price seems to be the norm in Harbin!)

Also if anybody knows of any websites I can look at in advance, that would help alot.

Cheers.

The big computer malls I found in Hongkong were at Wan Chai MTR station and in (or close to) the Ocean Centre in Kowloon. The computer mall at Wan Chai was big, but not very visible from the street. I had passed it about ten times before I noticed it was there. Ask for directions at the station.

In the end I didn't buy anything at all, except a copy of MS Office for the Mac at a much smaller computer mall at Causeway Bay. The reasons were partly that I didn't look for anything in particular, partly because I didn't find the prices that extraordinary, and partly because I felt somewhat claustrophobic in the main malls, which consist of narrow corridors with small shops. But then I like a lot of space around me. Most people seem to handle the narrow space without problems.

Mong Kok ok for price... if you go to Fortress, you should find some ok deals.

wanchai computer centre is best, exit for the exhibition centre at wanchai mtr and you'll see a mcdonalds on your right, its above there. prices are about 20% less than shenzhen where i live but check international warranties-ibm/lenovo are no quibble 3 year worldwide warranty so bear this in mind.

the computer centre at the star ferry in kowloo is a joke, there is a good place out by sham shui po mtr (dragon computer centre i think...) but wanchai is your best bet.

Re the Wanchai computer place. Prices of shops on the upper floor(s) are lower than those on the first floor.

Agree with David.Lodge about asking about warranties. I just bought a motorola phone in HK and the warranty includes the mainland which is great. Not all shops/brands seemed to offer that.

Not much in HK. 5% if you are lucky. Some will flatly refuse.

Wanchai was mentioned, Mongkok computer center is good too. How come nobody mentiond Golden Arkade in Sham Shui Po? It's worth a visit too. In terms of prices you will find little difference with those areas.

Star House is a bit more upmarket and have have a bit higher prices.
