vancouvergirl Posted April 23, 2006 at 10:42 PM Report Posted April 23, 2006 at 10:42 PM Hello everyone, I have been reading through all the previous posts and it has only left me more confused!! I am a CBC who actually couldn't speak any English until I went to kindergarten, but since then, I have lost a lot of it. My comprehension is pretty good (my parents will still talk chinese to me), and my speaking is OK (I know the words when I hear them, but I have trouble spitting them out when I'm trying to talk), however my reading and writing is non-existent. I have taken a few university continuing education courses and that has helped, but I really want to become more fluent. I am thinking about heading to Beijing this summer for an intensive 8-10 week course (time is flexible). Here's what I'm worried about...because my reading and writing is beginner level, will I automatically be put into a more basic class? I would much rather become fluent in conversation while in Beijing, then work on the reading and writing later. It sounds like the private schools may be a better option for me because the class sizes are smaller and you get to practise more, but some of those privates seem a little dodgy. Anyone else in a similar situation? Any advice on which school might be best? Global Village sounds like a good option, but the website is all in Korean! Can I start at anytime? And how far in advance do I have to register? (Still unsure about the job situation so I may only have a few weeks notice before I know if I'm able to go). Any help and advice is greatly appreciated... THANKS! Quote
JayK11 Posted June 10, 2006 at 01:02 PM Report Posted June 10, 2006 at 01:02 PM Hi, I'm an ABC (aust.) and will be going to china(beijing) later this year in september. most likely be there for 12-16 weeks depending on how fast i progress. so far the only real option i am considering is the world link intensive program, and i have heard also about the private ones, but also are worried about being ripped off. i can tell you that a friend of mine is right now in BLCU and says it is very good, many koreans and japanese so you can improve chinese much quickly. other universities include Fudan. anyways, if you find any private institutions of interest please tell. i think the application close around early mid july. http://www.worldlinkedu.com/chinese_language.html Quote
gato Posted June 11, 2006 at 01:10 AM Report Posted June 11, 2006 at 01:10 AM As many people have mentioned on this board, worldlink charges an arm and a leg for being the middle man. You could get a better deal if you apply directly to the schools. Of the Beijing choices, Diqiucun (Global Village, a private school) and Bejing Normal University (BNU) seem to enjoy the best reputation : http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/3039-definitive-guide-to-studying-in-beijing-updated-4112005&highlight=Global+Village Definitive Guide to Studying in Beijing http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/876-fat-cai-hair-vegetable5&highlight=diqiucun About Diqiucun http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/8268-bnu-students-anybody-here&highlight=diqiucun BNU students?
