How to use "須知?"

If you're to leave instructions for somebody, Is it proper to say

"留須知"

or

"寫須知?"

I don't know but it seems that it would depend on how you were leaving the instructions. When you leave a message on the phone you use liu2, if you are leaving a message on paper you would use xie3. That makes sense to me at least.

Thanks. However, I usually feel more comfortable with an expression if I've seen it before. I've never seen or heard "須知" (used as a direct object) with either 留, 寫 or any other verb . I'd like to get some confidence in the use of the term.

Well, you can 填写须知. That's filling in a notice on a form of some sort.

If you're to leave instructions for somebody,I think '须知' is enough,or maybe you can say it as '留指示'.I have never met with such a phrase(留须知).If it is just a phone message,'留言' is ok.

What's the difference between 指示 and 须知? 指示 is new to me.

I'm only familiar with 须知 from seeing it standalone at the tops of forms and so forth, with lots of...well, instructions following it.

The trick then is if I want to write 须知 in putting a form together for someone else. How do I describe what I am doing?

须知 can be usd as a verb which means 'you should know'.

eg.须知成功的背后必有辛苦的汗水。

It can be used as a noun which means notice,or orders you must abey.

eg.考试须知

whether as a verb or a noun,it shows a sense of command.You need to follow instructions and abey rules,right?

It's hard for me to explain the difference between the two.Maybe skylee will give the best answer.

Let me try:

须知 is what you need to know.

指示 is what you need to do.

(However, do bear in mind that, just like the word "instruction", what we need to know is sometimes the same as what we need to do!)
