wushijiao Posted May 2, 2006 at 04:54 AM Report Posted May 2, 2006 at 04:54 AM I would just like to give some positive feedback about a very useful book for doing well on the HSK 初中 listening section. Many people think the listening section is one of the hardest parts of the test. The first time I took the test, I had assumed because my listening was so goddamn amazing ( ), that I would easily get a 7 or an 8 on the listening section. Of course, it turns out that the formidable listening section was a bit faster, a bit harder, and a bit more random than I expected, and I only got a 6 on the section. Usually you will hear a short dialogue or line of conversation about some sort of thing in everyday life. It might be two friends gossiping about another person. It may be a person complaining about prices. It may be a person scheduling a plane flight. Although there are some news related questions at the end, for the most part the listenings don’t cover geeky academic subjects, and I would imagine that if you have primary learned Chinese in classrooms, this might be a problem. Even if you have a solid listening foundation, the dialogues are spoken fairly quickly, and the scenarios switch quickly. The first time I took the test, unfortunately I think there were some listenings that I know I normally would have understood easily if I had the full context. But, the test gives you no context. In my mind, it was hard to mentally change your frame of mind from being at a restaurant, to then listening to two family members talking about someone’s birthday party, to listening to an employee explain to her boss why she did a sloppy job at work…etc. That’s where HSK: 听力题型分析与训练 (初,中等) becomes really helpful. The wonderful editors of this book 王小宁, 候子玮 went through 3,500 simulation questions from various sources and then analyzed those question in order to find common question patterns. The book is thus divided into 23 chapters, with each chapter pertaining to a different question type. For example, there is the 数字题型 (Questions about numbers), 职业与身份题型 (Questions about professions and status) 语气题型 (questions about the tone of language)…etc The book will describe the nature of each type of listening. Then they will give a few examples. Then they will give the way in which the HSK often frames the question. Then they often give some key words or key things to look out for. Then they give about 15 practice questions of that question pattern (the book comes with tapes for that purpose). In this manner, you learn how the HSK listening test works. I recently took the test, and because of this book, I could pre-read the four answers, and usually predict the question type. Then by doing that, I could mentally prepare myself for what words or what situations I was likely to hear. For example, on one question I saw that all the possible answers were related to a profession, say A) 服务员, B) 老师, C) 记者, D) 司机. Then, because I knew they would say words related to the profession, but they wouldn’t directly mention it, I quickly thought of a few words related to each. Sure enough, one of those key words popped up. This systematic understanding of how the HSK tests your listening ability makes taking the test a lot easier. Anyway, I’d strongly recommend this helpful book, and I hope it can help people do well on future HSK’s. Quote
Scoobyqueen Posted September 26, 2008 at 09:44 PM Report Posted September 26, 2008 at 09:44 PM I agree with this review. This is an excellent book. The audios are only available on tapes though and the sound is not brillant but can still be used. The editor did a great job and incidentally has a host of other good HSK books to her name. Quote
vkim67 Posted January 26, 2011 at 05:06 PM Report Posted January 26, 2011 at 05:06 PM thanks so much for sharing~ i went back to xuefu shucheng and combed thru the entire learning chinese and hsk test prep section and sure enough, this book was at the very end in the corner below eye level. would never have caught it without this thread u dedicated to this book i'm wondering, did it come with a CD or tape? I just noticed my book doesn't have any audio but parts of each chapter require an audio portion. Quote
elina Posted January 28, 2011 at 03:36 AM Report Posted January 28, 2011 at 03:36 AM The book comes with tapes: http://www.studychineseculture.com/search.asp?keyword=%CC%FD%C1%A6%CC%E2%D0%CD%B7%D6%CE%F6%D3%EB%D1%B5%C1%B7&thetype=bookname&submit1=SEARCH Quote
vkim67 Posted January 31, 2011 at 02:55 PM Report Posted January 31, 2011 at 02:55 PM oh hm, i guess some come with tapes and some don't. thank u for that.. i actually wouldn't have a cassette player anyway :/ Quote
roddy Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:06 PM Report Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:06 PM Chinese bookshops may well keep the tapes separately, and not necessarily in public - you may need to ask. But if they've got the book there's a good chance they have the tapes somewhere . . . Quote
vkim67 Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:24 PM Report Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:24 PM Thanks! I should have asked. I think I may just order online because its not worth going back to the book store (nearly got frostbite on my toes waiting for the bus!!) and they might not even be open considering its the holidays. roddy Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:35 PM Report Posted January 31, 2011 at 03:35 PM Can't remember if you're at BLCU or not, but if you are the bookshops there may well have it - it's a BLCU press book. Quote
vkim67 Posted February 1, 2011 at 10:11 AM Report Posted February 1, 2011 at 10:11 AM hi no im actually at 哈工大 on the CET program. My online banking with bank of china wouldn't work for some reason even when I did EVERYTHING they asked for (download this, install that, change screen resolution, etc etc etc) so finally got my friend who's home for the holidays to make some purchases online for me. I'll be getting this book with the tapes, and the other two tingli books you recommended from taobao! amazon.cn didnt have them... but amazon.cn is a great and (seemingly) trustworthy since i use it in the states all the time..... and great customer service... my card wouldnt work with them either and i had no problem reaching a person on the telephone, finding chinglish speaker and they called me back twice to follow-up! bluetortilla Posted September 23, 2013 at 06:31 AM Report Posted September 23, 2013 at 06:31 AM I'm looking at the book on amazon.cn but I can't tell if it comes with a CD or not. I assume they'd have made the switch by now… If not, it wouldn't be any use to me as I have no way of playing tapes. Quote
bluetortilla Posted September 23, 2013 at 10:28 AM Report Posted September 23, 2013 at 10:28 AM Actually, I read the review (4 stars) and the student complained it didn't come with 磁带 (magnetic tape, which I take to mean 音带). Now, I really don't think of myself as a whiner, but how could you sell anything with cassette tape in this day and age? I guess going through the book without any audio would be a great help in understanding the types of listening problems, but it won't help me to practice. Any other recommendations? Quote
