trooper Posted February 7, 2004 at 06:12 PM Report Posted February 7, 2004 at 06:12 PM Good effort! I disagree on a couple of points though. I could be wrong on a couple of points - correct me if I am - but here's what I think: You look absolutely stunning. ni3 kan4shang4qu4 zhen1 piao4liang a (I think "xiang1 dang1" means quite or fairly and isn't as strong as "absolutely". smithsgj Posted February 9, 2004 at 07:39 AM Report Posted February 9, 2004 at 07:39 AM "Keep this item for me" I guess means "I want to buy this item but not right now so please don't sell it to anyone else". Fang zai pangbian or liu xia lai, whatever. Hasn't it struck anyone else that the alias Website is rather odd; that the words and phrases for translation appear to have been chosen almost at random; and that anyone posting on the internet asking for a translation of "church" or "normal" is either trolling or being a twit? Yes it seems strange. Words like "church" and "normal" can surely be looked up in a dictionary in seconds. If he's learning Chinese and is in China, then what are the chances that he doesn't have an English-Chinese dictionary with him? Would the same kind of person who doesn't own a dictionary have the organisation and patience to carefully compile and keep a list of words and phrases he wanted to learn? What about his question on how to say "I can feel this carpet with my fingers." Does anyone else think this is peculiar? On top of this, Website hasn't come back to this thread and thanked us for our help (which always happens on other threads after people ask for and then receive help). Or even come back to clarify what he meant by "keep this item for me" and "we haven't reached New York yet". It makes you wonder if he has ever even bothered to read our replies. Quote
