Old expressions still in use today

I am listening to 好心分手, and find it quite amusing that there are ancient expressions such as 凌遲 and 赴湯蹈火 in the lyrics (perhaps they are not that ancient but surely not modern either).

凌遲 = punishment that cuts off people's flesh bit by bit

赴湯蹈火 = risking everything (hellish tortures etc) to accomplish something

Have you come across similar expressions?

most lyrics are amusing :)

I like 琼瑶's lyrics.

If an expression that is still used today, then it is not old  Do you want old expressions that are not used today or the expressions that are still used but not so old today or the expressions that are not old but are not new or not up to date?

赴湯蹈火 may be an ancient saying, but it still popular today as an idiom in mandarin, and the 凌遲 is not so common, but most people can understand it.

BTW, i m afraid the lyric you mentioned was written in cantonese since some sayings are not so natural in mandarin.

It's terrible to use 凌遲 in any lyric. Brave Cantonese!
