Shadowdh Posted May 25, 2006 at 01:27 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 01:27 PM Hi there all, I am in London and having dickens of a time trying to locate the thats bj guide book... I cant even seem to find it on the amazon uk site... I can get it from the states but then the post is a killer and its the same if I order it on the thatsbj site... so I have looked around and thought I might get one of the old faithfuls like rough guide or lonely planet... (I am leaning more towards lonely planet at the moment as I used one for south east asia and it was pretty good..) so any suggestions from anyone would be mightily appreciated... Quote
gougou Posted May 25, 2006 at 02:14 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 02:14 PM Lonely Planet is a great companion when on the road, but severely lacks when you're interested in living in a place. I'd suggest you to pick up a copy of the TBJ guidebook once you get to Beijing. Spend the first night browsing through it, and you're all set for your stay! Quote
stephanhodges Posted May 25, 2006 at 03:29 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 03:29 PM I ordered mine directly from them last fall, as soon as the newer edition came out. It came fairly quickly. I don't have their web site in front of me, but you can order it from them direct. Quote
badr Posted May 25, 2006 at 03:50 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 03:50 PM if your go to http://www.thatsbj.com and look in the bottom left corner of your screen, you'll see a link that will take you directly to the item's page on amazon Quote
Shadowdh Posted May 25, 2006 at 05:46 PM Author Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 05:46 PM Gougou - thanks for the reply, as I am only transient (7 Weeks in Beijing only dagnabbit) the lonely planet may be the go... Stephan - yeah I looked into it but the postage was pretty exhorbitant... Badr - through amazon US the post is nearly as much as the book if I want to have it within the next month... if I want it in the next week or two its actually more than the book... Thanks for the replies guys... I am thinking I might get the LP for some reading before I get there and then get the insiders guide when I get there... or just wait till I get there... ahh sod it I might just bit the post and order it from amazon US.... badr Posted May 25, 2006 at 05:52 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 05:52 PM My experiences with LP books about China and Beijing have not been pleasant to say the least. This city changes at a rapid pace and most of those books cannot keep up with it. I would suggest spending some time on thatsbj.com and cityweekend.com.cn to find out what you need to know about Beijing then getting the that's Beijing guide once you get here. Quote
Shadowdh Posted May 25, 2006 at 06:09 PM Author Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 06:09 PM Thanks for the advice Badr... I will do just that... cheers mate... Quote
adrianlondon Posted May 25, 2006 at 08:44 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 08:44 PM Is there something specific you'd like to know? Or are you willing to scan/copy a few dozen pages? I have a copy (bought in Beijing last November) and live in London. Quote
Shadowdh Posted May 25, 2006 at 10:02 PM Author Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 10:02 PM Hi Adrian, nothing really specific... just wanted to flick through and get a few ideas about how I can do the most in the time I have... (well around my studies of course)... thanks very much for the offer, I may take you up on that... Quote
adrianlondon Posted May 26, 2006 at 12:04 AM Report Posted May 26, 2006 at 12:04 AM I plan (didn't realise how anal BNU were going to be about seeing and keeping my original degree certificate, so am now rushing around getting legitimate duplicates of stuff before their deadline) to study at BNU from September. IIRC that's also when you're going to be there. We can simply start planning once we arrive. That's my normal level of organisation anyway Quote
roddy Posted May 26, 2006 at 12:46 AM Report Posted May 26, 2006 at 12:46 AM If you really want something to read through before you come out, a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide will do, but you'll get a lot of the same stuff in the Insider's Guide. If you are planning to do any travelling, the best bet might be to get a Lonely Planet China or similar - you can read the Beijing bits now, use it when you are on tour, and get the Insider's Guide when you turn up. Shadowdh Posted May 26, 2006 at 06:39 AM Author Report Posted May 26, 2006 at 06:39 AM Hi Adrian, I will be there from 10 Jul till 24 August... its really only over the summer as thats when the holidays are for the kids... but if youre there early then planning in a bar somewhere might not be amiss... Roddy, thanks for the info... the travelling I will be doing will be in the line of weekend jaunts from Beijing... so the big book of China will probably be much wasted on this trip... and darn it now I am yo-yoing between LP and Thatsbj again... ahhh such is life... Lu Posted May 26, 2006 at 10:44 AM Report Posted May 26, 2006 at 10:44 AM Maybe you can buy an LP Beijing, if there's a recent one. It has information on the surroundings of the city as well, and it's much smaller (and cheaper) than the LP China. For other entertainment, I'd suggest checking the websites mentioned earlier, and picking up a copy of the That's (not the guidebook, but the magazine, it's free) when you get to BJ. And talk to people you meet there, they might have good suggestions also. Enjoy your stay! Quote
stephanhodges Posted May 26, 2006 at 12:20 PM Report Posted May 26, 2006 at 12:20 PM Be careful if you buy from Amazon. They were selling the old version last I checked. Quote
