JDinternational Posted May 25, 2006 at 07:51 PM Report Posted May 25, 2006 at 07:51 PM Has anyone had any firsthand experience with Dalian? I am looking to do a 6 month program and dalian seems to fit the bill, inexpensive, not saturated with internationals but not remote either.. Thanks JDI Quote
mrtoga Posted May 28, 2006 at 09:59 AM Report Posted May 28, 2006 at 09:59 AM Dalian is beautiful. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact I wish I was there now. They do speak a bit funny, with many of them seeming unable to pronounce "shi" (it comes out the same as "si"). However as long as you make an effort not to do that when you speak it all sounds pretty standard Mandarin to me. I have a bunch of information about three universities in Dalian on my website. Maybe it will be useful to you. jeffofarabia Posted May 28, 2006 at 02:21 PM Report Posted May 28, 2006 at 02:21 PM mrtoga, how cold is dalian? i lived in beijing for two years. is it better or worse? what is the pollution like? how would you compare living there with living in kunming (which is where I am thinking of going)? Redact207 Posted May 30, 2006 at 02:49 AM Report Posted May 30, 2006 at 02:49 AM I'm living & studying in Dalian now. It's much cleaner than Beijing, and a very beautiful & rich city. Not too many Westerner's, but there's a strong Japanese & Korean presence. I study at the Dalian Foreign Language institue, which is one of China's best. The Dongbei accent is pretty standard. The 'si' and 'shi' thing comes from the more western and country areas of China. All the teachers here speak perfectly standard mandarin. The only thing I've noticed is that Dalian people will tend to say 'dei' rather than 'dui'. No big deal. Quote
mrtoga Posted May 31, 2006 at 04:42 AM Report Posted May 31, 2006 at 04:42 AM Jeff, Dalian is not really much colder than Beijing because it is right on the coast there - you will notice a big difference from Shenyang which is a fair distance inland. Pollution is not a problem - in fact I think it is the cleanest city in China. Unfortunately I have never been to Kunming so I could not comment. I would say that Dalian is at its most beautiful during the summer and Autumn though - may be nicer down south in the depths of winter. No comparison with Beijing at all - much smaller, more compact, lots of parks and stuff, cheaper and with beaches in close proximity. Quote
