katafei Posted May 28, 2006 at 07:01 PM Report Posted May 28, 2006 at 07:01 PM Hello all, i've been trying to think of something special to send to friends in Taiwan. I understand chocolate is popular in China, is this also the case in Taiwan? and how about Dutch cheese? Would that be something that is not widely available? any suggestions are more than welcome!!1:help Quote
雅各 Posted May 29, 2006 at 05:18 AM Report Posted May 29, 2006 at 05:18 AM Hi, Do you have any South African shops near you? Try Biltong! It's a South African dried meat. Delicious! Your friends in Taiwan will love it. 雅各 Quote
skylee Posted May 29, 2006 at 11:52 AM Report Posted May 29, 2006 at 11:52 AM Re popularity of chocolates in Taiwan. I've read a blog of a taiwanese traveller who repeatedly praises the quality of chocolate food/drink in HK, which seems to imply that he couldn't have such quality chocolates in Taiwan (strange ... ). So my guess is that quality chocolates should be good gifts for your friends in Taiwan. 香港的朱古力,真的非常好吃,離開前還特地買了朱古力帶回台灣。 Quote
katafei Posted May 30, 2006 at 06:54 PM Author Report Posted May 30, 2006 at 06:54 PM Thank you both for your input. Gosh, I have no idea what Biltong is!! I'll have a look around. I figure it will probably be something like chocolate. It's so difficult to decide when you haven't got a clue what is available in Taiwan nor what the difference in taste is (probably a lot:)) Quote

Lu Posted May 31, 2006 at 01:54 PM Report Posted May 31, 2006 at 01:54 PM Cheese is rarely available in Taiwan, so that is an idea. Chocolate might be an even better idea, also more 'mail-able' than cheese. Or you can send some local delicacy (if you're Dutch: speculaas or stroopwafels are good) or souvenir. Quote
katafei Posted June 14, 2006 at 09:26 PM Author Report Posted June 14, 2006 at 09:26 PM stroopwafels and speculaas sound like a great idea! And I have just bought Fudge in the Channel Islands (Herm), which is wrapped in a beautiful box. I think they will like that. How would a mix of 'drop' go down in Taiwan? Thanks en alvast heel erg bedankt, Katafei Quote
Lu Posted June 26, 2006 at 02:42 PM Report Posted June 26, 2006 at 02:42 PM Graag gedaan :-) I wouldn't send drop though, Chinese medicine tastes like drop, so Chinese (including Taiwanese) usually don't like it. Quote
