website Posted February 12, 2004 at 05:20 AM Report Posted February 12, 2004 at 05:20 AM Ni hao, I think my Chinese is good enough for eating and buying things, but sometimes I get in a situation where I have no idea what to say. For example, what can you say in Mandarin when you are watching TV or using the web? Does anyone make word and phrase lists like this? How do you say "remote control", "change the channel", "increase the volume", "rerun", "mute", "news", "boring", or "this show sucks"? How do you say "control key", "email", "printout", "mouse", "screen", "keyboard", monitor", "cable", "space bar", "Windows", "frozen", "reset button", "hardware", or "printer" ? I have a small dictionary but it often lists words that are for WRITTEN Chinese and not spoken Chinese. Sometimes I learn a word and some Chinese person will tell me that they don't say that word. My dictionary also doesn't have phrases. My girlfriend is not here again or otherwise I would ask her. Finding a new girlfriend would be easy here in China, but she buys me stuff, I have known her for two years, and I love her. Mafan ni le! This sure is a friendly and helpful forum. http://www.china.org.cn/english/847.htm Quote
cometrue Posted February 12, 2004 at 06:26 AM Report Posted February 12, 2004 at 06:26 AM How do you say "remote control"' date=' "change the channel", "increase the volume", "rerun", "mute", "news", "boring", or "this show sucks"? [/quote'] let me give a try: remote control=遥控器(yao2kong4qi4)or遥控(yao2kong4) change the channel=换频道(huan4pin2dao4) increase the volume=调大音量(tiao2da4yin1liang4) rerun=重放(chong2fang4)or重播(chong2bo1)? mute=静音(jing4 yin1)? news=新闻(xin1wen2) boring=无聊(wu2liao2) control key=控制键(kong4 zhi4jian4) but if you mean the key on keyboard, we usually say" control 键" printout= 打印(da3yin4) mouse=鼠标(shu3biao1) screen=屏幕(ping2mu4) keyboard键盘(jian4pan2) monitor显示器(xian3shi4qi4) cable电线(cian4xian4) space bar空格键(kong4ge2jian4) Windows=Windows, the official saying is 视窗, but almost nobody uses it frozen reset button(what's this?)重新设置按钮? hardware硬件(ying4jian4) printer打印机(da3yin4ji1) Quote
skylee Posted February 12, 2004 at 06:58 AM Report Posted February 12, 2004 at 06:58 AM cometrue you are too kind. I think website should buy a better / more up-to-date dictionary or use an on-line translator such as this. I think mouse is lao3 shu3/hao4 zi (the rodent) or hua2 shu3 (the one on your desk). shu3 biao1 is cursor. Quote

Quest Posted February 16, 2004 at 07:13 PM Report Posted February 16, 2004 at 07:13 PM How about 重启键 for reset button. Sadly I forgot how I used to call the reset button on the Nintendo red&white console, but I am sure it wasn't called 重启键. Quote
