Ian_Lee Posted February 13, 2004 at 08:26 PM Report Posted February 13, 2004 at 08:26 PM I would say that the cultural difference in perception between East and West is best manifested by Dragon as an icon. In East Asia, dragon stands for strength, justice, spirit, wisdom,.....etc In the West, dragon stands for strength, viciousness, cunningness,....etc. Their only common trait is strength. In Lunar New Year, you wish the others as spirited as dragon and horse. But in Greek tales, dragons were bad creatures that had to be killed. More amazingly, both the drgaons in the east and west were just imaginery creatures (maybe dragon could be related to dinosaurs in the west). So when my kid asked me whether dragon is good/bad after she got confused in reading both Chinese and English fairy tales, the only answer I could tell her was that "The Dragons born in the East are good while those born in the West are bad!"
