Nathaniel Brown Posted June 12, 2006 at 03:08 AM Report Posted June 12, 2006 at 03:08 AM Hi, My wife has a Z visa at the moment and I've had a bit of a hard time finding a job. I had planning on studying for six to twelve months and applied at a University near my wife’s school. After hearing nothing back I rang them up and they said to arrive on an F visa and then get it changed to a X visa when I got there. I told them that I wanted to get the X visa in Australia because it cost 2 to 3 times as much to get it changed in China as opposed to getting it in Australia. They said they’d send the information so I could get the visa… they haven’t. Strike one! I have also considered teaching English in China and everyone told me that it would be easy to get a job teaching English. While I’ve had five people tell me that they’ll give me a job the day I land I haven’t had any willing to give me a formal offer so I can get a Z visa. Strike two! My current plan is to simply come as a dependant on my wife’s Z visa, which gets me into the country and allows me to work if they employer applies for a working permit. This means that for the first year I can study Mandarin for about 2 hours a day at Diqiucun and then spend another 2 hours a day doing studying by myself. If I end up getting a job offer that’s worth accepting I can take it but I don’t have to. Does anyone know of any problems with this idea? Are there any problems with a dependant Z visa that I don’t know about? Is there a problem with studying at a private school in a dependant Z visa? Any other comments? Quote
trevelyan Posted June 12, 2006 at 06:30 AM Report Posted June 12, 2006 at 06:30 AM X visas and Z visas can be difficult to arrange. If you are studying at a proper university they should be more than willing to provide you with the necessary documentation though. Easiest thing to do is come in on an F-visa. Otherwise, come into the country however you can and make your arrangements that way. When you get the paperwork for your new visa sorted out, take a short trip to Hong Kong to turn over the paperwork. Quote
Nathaniel Brown Posted June 12, 2006 at 06:48 AM Author Report Posted June 12, 2006 at 06:48 AM Yea I got that impression as well. The university was one of the smaller ones but it was near my wife's school and they said they'd send the paper work but they haven't. Now it's past the 30th of May which is the cut off date for most of the larger Universities and from what I've read I may as well do private since I'm a lot more interested in speaking and listening the reading or writing. In the end I may get an F visa and change BUT since I can get a dependant visa (which last for over 12 months) I thought it might be easier and then figure out what I want to do in 12 months. Quote
