geraldc Posted June 26, 2006 at 08:10 PM Report Posted June 26, 2006 at 08:10 PM There's always rumours about foreign students getting raped too. Quote
roddy Posted June 27, 2006 at 01:57 AM Report Posted June 27, 2006 at 01:57 AM Unless you are actually getting concrete information - the wheres, whens, whys, hows - then I'd call it a rumor and not bother passing it on. The rate at which rumors amplify and multiply when nobody trusts the press is remarkable. Quote
Shadowdh Posted June 27, 2006 at 06:35 AM Report Posted June 27, 2006 at 06:35 AM Kinda like conspiracy theories really... there used to be a game we played when I was very young called "Chinese Whispers" (no idea why it was called that come to think of it) and it would start with one person at the start of a circle being told something in a whisper (thats the whisper part) and then passing it to the next and so on... by the time it got to the end of the circle it usually came out very different and strange... (still no idea where the Chinese part of the name came from...) Quote
Alhazred Posted July 1, 2006 at 10:10 AM Report Posted July 1, 2006 at 10:10 AM Funny, we call this same game "téléphone arabe" in French and I don't have a clue where the Arab comes from, either... Quote
shdwsclan Posted July 12, 2006 at 01:03 AM Report Posted July 12, 2006 at 01:03 AM That is not uncommon and is many times perpetrated by the chinese police, as in the american english teacher that was slain by police. Quote
gato Posted July 12, 2006 at 05:32 AM Report Posted July 12, 2006 at 05:32 AM That is not uncommon and is many times perpetrated by the chinese police How not uncommon? Quote
skylee Posted July 12, 2006 at 10:30 AM Report Posted July 12, 2006 at 10:30 AM As far as I know, the game is called "以訛傳訛" in Chinese. Quote
Josh-J Posted July 12, 2006 at 02:24 PM Report Posted July 12, 2006 at 02:24 PM Off-topic but maybe "Chinese Whispers" is because it ends up unintelligable - like chinese (or arabic for the french version); I suppose Chinese is just a conveniently obscure language to english speakers. Compare to: "Its all greek to me" Quote
shdwsclan Posted July 13, 2006 at 03:16 AM Report Posted July 13, 2006 at 03:16 AM Well, its more complex than just this. This can stem from 2 places. 1. Because of the current cold war between the chinese govt and the west, the perps know they will get away with it for 2 reasons. Cops cover their backs, and the state department[or another countries' equivalent] will try to avoid any investigation because this may increase international tensions. 2. Since these people are foreigners, they are considered weak and easy targets. This is sort-of of true in every country. The only difference, in many countries, is the magnitude of such corruption. Here is a PDF with a transparency chart. Transparency is otherwise known as non-corruption. The higher the transparency score, the less corruption. http://www.transparency.org/content/download/3221/19540/file/worldmap.pdf Also, the site has a list that is available at the following... http://www.transparency.org/policy_research/surveys_indices/cpi/2005 USA is #17 Mainland China is about #78 Hong Kong is #15 In florida there is a lot of corruption, especially clearwater because of the scientology cult. Chicago also has some corruption and this is evident from police pushing drugs, incompetence and also the influence of the scientology cult. Also, mayor daley(mayor of chicago) has refused to allow film crew from COPS(an american police show) to tag along with the chicago police on bust....i wonder why? Quote
