Difference between 认识 and 知道

I just started learning 汉语. But I don't really now when to use 认识 (rènshi) and when to use 知道 (zhīdào).

I thought 认识 is used for persons.

"I don't know him" => "我不认识他"

and 知道 is used to express lack of knowledge

"Where does he live?" "他住在哪儿?"

"I don't know" "我不知道"

but when you want to express that you don't know that movie. Do you use 知道, 认识 or something else (like 没看过 - meikanguo)?

I'd venture to even say instead.

那个电影我不熟.

没看过 simply means that you haven't "seen" that movie.

If you've read reviews or learned about a movie, but still haven't seen it, you could actually "know" that movie somewhat.

"熟" engenders familiarity. It works for people and everything.

I think of "I don't know that movie" as "我不知道这部电影" or "我不清楚这部电影":wink:

when to use 认识 (rènshi) and when to use 知道 (zhīdào).

when you have seen someone (face to face), you can say you 认识 (rènshi) someone;

when you know (face to face or not) someone or you know something happened, you can use 知道 (zhīdào).

you can say 认识 (rènshi) someone, but you can not 认识 (rènshi) something.

for example:

you can say:我 认识 (rènshi) 丽丽.(I 认识 (rènshi) Lily.)

you can not say 我认识这场事故.(i 认识 (rènshi) this accident).

you can say 我 知道 (zhīdào)丽丽.(I 知道 (zhīdào) Lily)

you can say 我知道这场事故. (I 知道 (zhīdào) this accident).

我不知道这部电影 is awkward Chinese, you can't use 知道 like that...

As a verb,认识 mainly is used to describle that you have met some person in the past.

if it is used as a noun,it always express a theory you drew a conclusion in some field on something,for example:

从这件事上，我清醒的认识到他并不是那么的爱我。（verb）

或者

对他，我有了重新的认识。（noun）

知道 is a verb,it can't be used as a noun like "你有新的知道吗？"but 认识 can,"你有新的认识吗？"

知道 often refers to something include person but it mostly focus what happened but not what feature is.

我知道他。maybe you didn't meet him ago,so you know him should be for his story.

我认识他。you must have seen him,but you perhaps don't know something about him.

我知道这件事。It must be use 知道 not 认识。
