New e-dictionary - Unihan + Adsotrans on MDict (PocketPC)

I have created a new dictionary merging entries from Unihan +Adsotrans together.

Until I can think of a more sexy name, I am tentatively calling it UniAdso.

I have filtered out the single character entries from the Adsotrans dictionary, since the Unihan entries are already comprehensive.

Thanks go out to David L. (for providing access to the AdsoTrans database)

and J. (aka KongLong) for his formatting expertise and for providing access to his customized Unihan MDict source file

- fomatting for this dictionary is 100% based on Konglong's excellent Unihan dictionary.

I have added links for the individual hanzi in the compound words to the Unihan entries.

So if you click on any character in the word, it will show the meaning for that single hanzi.

I find this a very useful feature.

At $0, I think this dictionary is really good value for money. :)

This dictionary is just a draft version, I am looking for feedback and appreciate your input.

I do not a place to host this file publically, it is about 7MB. If anyone help me with this, that would be appreciated.

In the meantime, if anyone is interested, PM me and I will get this out to you via email or private FTP.

MDict is freely available for personal use, get it from http://www.octopus-studio.com/product.en.htm It can be called on to lookup from any program/webbrowser/editor by clicking on a floating icon.

As a final note, Adsotrans is always looking for individual submissions for help on updating their DB:

Unihan doesn't distinguish which pronunciation goes with which meaning. It would probably be better to keep the pinyin and English def. from the adsotrans dictionary for single characters.

Good point.

A possibility would be to use the pinyin entries from adsotrans instead of Unihan.

Based on other feedback, I will also be adding an additional line for traditional characters for the adsotrans entries.

I'm sure a lot of people will be happy with this, but personally I won't be able to tell. I have Palm, MacOS and some access to Windows XP, but not Windows CE. Any plans to port it to other platforms?

Posted

Sorry, MDict only runs on PPC, HPC and MS Smartphone.

However, if there is demand for it, this dictionary could be ported for StarDict (http://stardict.sourceforge.net/) which runs on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Win32.

I believe there are one or 2 ported versions for MacOS as well.

Before I do that though, I've been thinking about adding an index based on pinyin (with and without tones), which would be really useful for PDAs without Chinese input ability.

I have to make sure it won't create a too-large file however.

Stay tuned...

Some good news, Roddy has generously offered to host this file on chinese-forums:

I could host the files for you. If you have a domain name, I could host that too. PM me within the next couple of days. (I'm leaving for China on 11th July and will be out of touch for a week or two at that point).

Cool dictionary, I would give it a try.

Would it be possible for you to use the databases to process Roddy's HSK list?

Posted

Yes, more specific dictionaries are possible.

Am i right in understanding that you want to have dictionary with only HSK vocabulary?

Very nice! Just got this installed on Mdict on my new smartphone, works great.

It was very thoughtful of the creators to include Cantonese pronunciations. Is there a version for traditional script?

Hey Smalltownfart...

I've been trying to get a hold of you. Send a PM and an email. Please email me when you can.

Thanks

There is no English>CN function, or? I would be specially interested in EN>cantonese for PPC

(I have already Pleco and may that suits my Mandarin demand 100%)
