Ian_Lee Posted February 18, 2004 at 07:31 PM Report Posted February 18, 2004 at 07:31 PM Does anybody notice that China and Hong Kong are in the same group of the World Cup Soccer 2006 Preliminary Qualifying Round? The other two teams in the same group are Kuwait and Malaysia. Yesterday China defeated Kuwait 1-0 while Hong Kong defeated Malaysia 3-1. And the first match between China and Hong Kong will be kicked in Hong Kong on March 31. Even though Hong Kong's soccer standard has deteriorated over the decades, its team is known as a giant killer. Recently it only lost to South Korea by 0:1 in the Olympics Qualifying match. And during the last time China and Hong Kong was put in the same group by FIFA in 1985, what happened? Hong Kong beat China by 2:1 in Beijing. Afterwards the soccer fans in Beijing bursted into riot. Just wish it won't happen again this time. By the way, why is Hong Kong labelled as "Hong Kong" but Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei" in the FIFA official website? Quote

Ian_Lee Posted April 1, 2004 at 12:15 AM Author Report Posted April 1, 2004 at 12:15 AM A riot was averted. The 'patriotic" Hong Kong team lost by 0:1 to the China team last night in the World Cup Soccer Preliminary. But the China team did not score the only goal until 20 minutes before the end of the match. Quote
ala Posted April 1, 2004 at 02:27 AM Report Posted April 1, 2004 at 02:27 AM By the way, why is Hong Kong labelled as "Hong Kong" but Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei" in the FIFA official website? Because the government of Hong Kong does not claim sovereignty over mainland China. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted November 5, 2004 at 10:00 PM Author Report Posted November 5, 2004 at 10:00 PM Hahaha.......After China team's unexpected loss to Kuwait during the 2nd round, now China team has to beat the Hong Kong team by at least 4-5 goals to avoid being eliminated from the 2006 World Cup Final. So can China team make it on the 17th? Or will the Hong Kong team yield deliberately based on "patriotic" compassion? Let's see Quote
Ian_Lee Posted November 16, 2004 at 07:57 PM Author Report Posted November 16, 2004 at 07:57 PM Tomorrow's China-HK game even makes big international headline: http://www.iht.com/articles/2004/11/16/sports/soccer.html Quote
Ian_Lee Posted November 17, 2004 at 07:46 PM Author Report Posted November 17, 2004 at 07:46 PM After the extremely "patriotic" friendly match which HK lost to China by a stunning 0-7 last night, billion soccer fans in Mainland are shocked by the result of another even friendlier match which Malaysia was defeated by 1:6 to Kuwait. Hahahaha.....politics is dirty, so is sport. If HK team had known China team were so impotent, they should have already played a "friendly" match during the first round and let China team score more. Hahahaha.....politics is dirty, so is sport. If it was staged, the result would have been something like 5-4 or 5-3. I can't believe HK would have agreed to 食蛋, even if it wanted to let China win. Ian_Lee Posted November 17, 2004 at 09:16 PM Author Report Posted November 17, 2004 at 09:16 PM Quest: Check the record. The worst match that HK ever lost to China in the last decade was only 1:3. And in the first round China beat HK only 1:0 just in last March. And for this qualification round, China team only scored 7 goals for all matches added together. So do you mean the China team players suddenly remembered how to kick the ball into the goal last night? Well, 5-3 or 5-4 score would not put China into the World Cup Final. Even 7:0 that China scored last night still did not make it. Why? Because the Malay and Arab Moslem brothers acted even more "friendlier" last night. Hmmm......I bet billion fans in Mainland wished Kuwait were still occupied by Saddam Hussein Quote
Quest Posted November 18, 2004 at 12:02 AM Report Posted November 18, 2004 at 12:02 AM China's ousted. Sorry, I guess you were right. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_18-11-2004_pg2_15 Quote
Ian_Lee Posted November 18, 2004 at 12:26 AM Author Report Posted November 18, 2004 at 12:26 AM Read some HK newspaper's report and comment: http://hk.news.yahoo.com/041117/60/16tg1.html http://hk.news.yahoo.com/041117/60/16td0.html It is a game of 21 players against 1 player. Only the HK goalkeeper took it seriously in the game. Hmmm.....Of course, the other 10 HK players were patriotic while this goalkeeper was unpatriotic. Quote
bhchao Posted November 29, 2005 at 05:44 PM Report Posted November 29, 2005 at 05:44 PM The final draw where the 32 finalists are divided into 8 groups will be announced December 9th. http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/t/finaldraw/index.html Being in the same group with both Brazil and Italy in the first round will most likely guarantee that you will not make it past the first round. I rooted for Korea in 2002, and will continue rooting for Korea in 2006. Quote
bhchao Posted December 9, 2005 at 09:38 PM Report Posted December 9, 2005 at 09:38 PM The results of the final draw were released today: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/group/index.html No England-Argentina rivalry in the first round this time. Korea gets to play against France, the '98 champions, in the first round. Quote

bhchao Posted June 13, 2006 at 05:35 PM Report Posted June 13, 2006 at 05:35 PM Came across this amusing article: http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200606/200606130025.html Has anyone been watching the World Cup? England has its Beckham, Germany has its Ballack, and Korea has its Park Ji Sung. Looks like USA is finished. They lost to Czech Republic 3-0 and the odds are against them in the next game with Italy. Quote
Outofin Posted June 13, 2006 at 05:52 PM Report Posted June 13, 2006 at 05:52 PM Only watch the first half of US-Czech. I wasn't impressed by the American team. They still seem like a new comer. Quote
skylee Posted June 14, 2006 at 03:03 PM Report Posted June 14, 2006 at 03:03 PM I've come across this interesting article on the Sweden vs Trinidad match -> 一場無關痛癢的世界波 (note - 波 in HK means ball) 一場無關痛癢的世界波中國歷史上的1587年,亦即明朝萬曆皇帝在位第15年,全年沒有大事發生。但一位學者從這個「無關痛癢的一年」(A Year of No Significance)裡,看出了明朝由盛轉衰的大勢(見黃仁宇著《萬曆十五年》)。 Quote
flameproof Posted June 17, 2006 at 01:00 AM Report Posted June 17, 2006 at 01:00 AM I wonder if Hong Kong is the only place in the world which does not have live coverage of the worldcup? Well, sporting events are never shown on HK TV, quite pathetic .... Quote
skylee Posted June 17, 2006 at 02:54 AM Report Posted June 17, 2006 at 02:54 AM There IS live coverage of the World Cup in HK. You just have to subscribe to the Cable TV (i.e. pay for it). Quote
flameproof Posted June 17, 2006 at 03:08 AM Report Posted June 17, 2006 at 03:08 AM The question is if you really want to pay HK$7000 or so for an event that is free to view in most other countries. I just don't like to pay ransom...... BTW, China has coverage on at least 2 free to air channels. Quote
