geraldc Posted June 17, 2006 at 11:17 PM Report Posted June 17, 2006 at 11:17 PM Won't most people be asleep for the live games anyway? It's not as if China or HK qualified. In the UK we don't even get live premiership games unless you pay for it. There was a period where lots of people were watching live premiership games that were being transmitted over the internet from China. Quote
bhchao Posted June 18, 2006 at 09:37 PM Report Posted June 18, 2006 at 09:37 PM wow, Korea tied France. I thought Korea was doomed, but then Park Ji Sung scored at the 81st minute. Quote
skylee Posted June 20, 2006 at 03:54 PM Report Posted June 20, 2006 at 03:54 PM How is Italy doing? I see people gather at cafes watching the games but have no idea which teams are playing ... Quote
roddy Posted June 20, 2006 at 04:01 PM Report Posted June 20, 2006 at 04:01 PM Anyone staying up for the England game tonight? I was going to but gave up. I got fed up with the last one, just started singing Flower of Scotland when it looked like they were going to be held to a draw and they started scoring . . . Quote
Shadowdh Posted June 20, 2006 at 04:15 PM Report Posted June 20, 2006 at 04:15 PM I will be staying up for it... but its not that hard as I am in the UK at the minute... not sure if I will watch the whole thing though... too much going on in my life and soccer doesnt interest me that much... well except for times like these... bhchao Posted June 20, 2006 at 08:57 PM Report Posted June 20, 2006 at 08:57 PM 2-2 draw between England and Sweden. Both will go to Round of 16. Sweden will have a tougher time because they will play against Germany in the next round, while England should be able to trump Ecuador. Quote
JackP Posted June 21, 2006 at 01:31 AM Report Posted June 21, 2006 at 01:31 AM I set my alarm and got up for the England vs Sweden game, but that didn't really work. I couldn't keep my eyes open so went back to sleep after half an hour or so... Why do I always end up in the wrong time zone during events like this? Quote
bhchao Posted June 21, 2006 at 06:20 AM Report Posted June 21, 2006 at 06:20 AM I will be staying up for the Switzerland-Korea match on Friday. Go Red Devils!! Quote
bhchao Posted June 25, 2006 at 03:59 AM Report Posted June 25, 2006 at 03:59 AM Well it looks like we have 14 teams left in the World Cup. A big game coming up is Germany vs. Argentina. Who do you think will prevail? Quote
Weronika Posted June 25, 2006 at 07:48 AM Report Posted June 25, 2006 at 07:48 AM poor Mexicans, but they were so so gooooood Quote
flameproof Posted June 25, 2006 at 11:32 AM Report Posted June 25, 2006 at 11:32 AM Germany is the strongest team. The final could be Germany vs. Brazil. Quote
md1101 Posted June 25, 2006 at 05:26 PM Report Posted June 25, 2006 at 05:26 PM i think argentina are better than germany this year... but the home crowd should get germany through. so possibly another germany brazil final. Italy are good. but they're gonna get knocked out by australia in the second round... too bad they got such a tough draw to come up against us... oh well too bad for them ... aus will then lose to germany in the semi's. bhchao Posted June 26, 2006 at 03:56 AM Report Posted June 26, 2006 at 03:56 AM good luck to the aussies. they have a good coach in Hiddink. he's the man. Portugal is doing quite well. It would be a big upset if the underdog, Portugal, defeats England. Quote
bhchao Posted June 27, 2006 at 01:42 AM Report Posted June 27, 2006 at 01:42 AM The LATimes published this commentary on the Netherlands-Portugal game: http://www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/la-sp-soccol26jun26,0,3028575.story?coll=la-home-headlines The 2006 World Cup has been irrevocably tainted. It happened here Sunday night in a second-round game between Portugal and the Netherlands that some will call memorable and others will label a disgrace. Disgrace is the better fit. The Portuguese won, 1-0, to advance to the quarterfinals, but earned no friends from the time-wasting and sly tricks played by captain Luis Figo and Co. Or perhaps Figo believes head-butting an opponent is all part of the game. It will take years for the Dutch to repair their once-proud reputation for stylish, attacking soccer. The team fielded by Coach Marco van Basten turned to violence when its skills fell woefully short. If Portugal was the pickpocket, then the Netherlands was the thug. Or perhaps Dutch defender Khalid Boulahrouz believes slapping an opponent in the face is appropriate behavior. And then there were the referees... and the NYTimes wrote this piece on the Australia-Italy game: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/sports/AP-SOC-WCup-Italy-Australia.html?_r=1&oref=slogin The Socceroos were tough on Italy. The referee was tougher on Australia. Another questionable call in this World Cup showed Italy the way to the quarterfinal Monday, giving the Italians a penalty kick that Francesco Totti converted for the 1-0 win as time expired.Moments earlier, Italy's Fabio Grosso was dribbling a few strides from the goalmouth when Lucas Neill slid in front of him. The Italian cut in Neill's direction and tried to leap clear, but tripped over the defender's back. To the amazement of the Socceroos, Spanish referee Luis Medina immediately ruled it a penalty with 12 seconds remaining in extra time. Totti, a second-half substitute, sent his penalty kick high and to the right of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who guessed correctly but couldn't stretch far enough to stop it. With no time left to restart, the Italians started celebrating. ''We suffered but we gave them no chances,'' said Italy coach Marcello Lippi, whose team plays Friday in the quarterfinals against Ukraine. ''This is an incredible joy.'' There was no joy for the Socceroos, whose howls of protest over the call gave way to head-shaking and resignment. ''I just can't believe it, mate,'' Australian forward Tim Cahill said. ''We play all our lives to be honest on the pitch and to work hard and I suppose these days you fall over on the pitch and get a penalty, free kick whatever. It's disappointing. I'm furious. It's unbelievable. The luck we've had with refereeing decisions this World Cup. Everything's been against us.'' About the only people in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion who thought Grosso was fouled were the Italians -- and Medina. With a match-fixing scandal rumbling along back home, only Italy could come up with this scenario -- though there was no suggestion of any skullduggery here. Only more suggestions of a bad decision by the referee. ''It's cruel, very cruel,'' Australian striker Mark Viduka said. ''This was a game where we really dominated. We had the feeling that if the game went into extra time we were going to beat them.''.... I feel sorry for Australia With 12 seconds remaining, the Italians are awarded a questionable penalty kick. geraldc Posted June 30, 2006 at 08:11 PM Report Posted June 30, 2006 at 08:11 PM Watching the Italy Ukraine game, and it's pretty dull. So dull in fact that I noticed the advertising hoardings that previously read "Bud Bud" (due to Anheuser Busch not being allowed to use the name Budweiser on Continental Europe) now reads "Bud 百威". I don't know why but it feels kind of cool there being a Chinese language ad in the world cup While we're talking about the world cup, who want's to explain this East Week headline to me? Quote
skylee Posted July 1, 2006 at 01:19 PM Report Posted July 1, 2006 at 01:19 PM Watching the Italy Ukraine game, and it's pretty dull. I was in a hotel in Turin close to the main train station last night and it was unbearably noisy well after midnight after Italy had won Ukraine ... I think the italians just want a pretext to celebrate ... it was like this everywhere I was in whenever they had won (Czech, Australia, Ukraine) ... And now I am in Paris and the France/Brazil match will be played tonight ... I wish England and Italy get to play in the final ... Quote
bhchao Posted July 1, 2006 at 07:05 PM Report Posted July 1, 2006 at 07:05 PM Portugal has upset England, and will most likely play Brazil in the semifinals. (unless France unexpectedly beats Brazil) Another exciting game coming up is Germany vs. Italy. This should be interesting to watch. Quote
bhchao Posted July 2, 2006 at 12:32 AM Report Posted July 2, 2006 at 12:32 AM I can't believe it. France unexpectedly beat Brazil. Now it's going to be Portugal vs. France, and Germany vs. Italy. Quote
