Harvey Posted July 15, 2006 at 07:58 AM Report Posted July 15, 2006 at 07:58 AM Hi, I was looking at the NSEP scholarship for graduate studies, and was wondering if anyone has done it before. http://www.iie.org/programs/nsep/graduate/default.htm They encourage doing a graduate program which includes time abroad... and they encourage studying non-tradiational foreign languages, such as Mandarin (though Mandarin seems to be so popular now they are trying to move people to other languages still)... Just curious if anyone has given this a shot and how the experience was! Quote
Jive Turkey Posted July 17, 2006 at 02:56 AM Report Posted July 17, 2006 at 02:56 AM I've known a couple of people who got NSEP scholarships as undergrads and grad students. The difficulty of getting one depends on the government's demand for users of a certain language and the supply of users of that language who are willing to work for the government. If you are planning to teach in a university, accepting NSEP funding can hurt your reputation in some circles. If you want to work for the government, it's a good thing to go for. The undergrad I knew who got full funding from NSEP to study Chinese had only studied Chinese for two years in the US and he planned to study in Shenzhen. Not a very impressive applicant, but back in 1998, that was what they were accepting. I have no idea how hard it is to get an NSEP scholarship to study Chinese now. Quote
